Jak Alnwick makes his first senior start for Newcastle United as the Magpies travel to Rio Ave for a pre-season friendly on Saturday night (6pm kick-off).
The 20-year-old goalkeeper's only previous first team experience came as a substitute in a friendly victory over Hartlepool almost a year ago.
Alnwick has since been an unused replacement a handful of times in the Barclays Premier League and Europa League but is in from the start this time for the first warm-up game of United's Portuguese training camp.
Aside from the Academy graduate stopper and fellow youngster Paul Dummett, manager Alan Pardew has named an experienced starting line-up for the fixture, including six senior internationals.
In a 4-2-3-1 formation, Alnwick is protected by a back four of Davide Santon, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Steven Taylor and Dummett.
Captain-for-the-night Yohan Cabaye will anchor the midfield alongside Vurnon Anita, and the creative trio of Sylvain Marveaux, Haris Vuckic and Jonas Gutierrez will feed lone front man Yoan Gouffran.
On the substitutes' bench there are places for Rob Elliot, Mike Williamson, Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote, Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Adam Campbell and Shola Ameobi.
