Sylvain Marveaux agreed a five-year deal with Newcastle United on 18th June, 2011, signing from Rennes for an undisclosed fee, with the deal officially completed on 1st July.
The winger travelled out to America on the Club's Stateside pre-season tour and played friendlies against Sporting Kansas City and Orlando City, before having another run-out on their return to Tyneside, against Fiorentina.
A slight knock ruled Marveaux out of action for a few weeks, however, but he finally made his Magpies debut on 25th August, 2011, away at Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup second round.
A key performer in United's cup games in the early part of the 2011/12 campaign, Marveaux was handed his Premier League debut for Newcastle as they beat Everton 2-1 at home on 5th November, 2011.
However, he suffered an groin injury in the second half of that fixture which forced him off and would require surgery. Marveaux travelled to the world-renowned Steadman Clinic, in Colarado, where his hip and groin were operated on by Dr Marc Phillipon.
After five months sidelined, the winger made his return to first team action on the final day of the 2011/12 campaign as a second half substitute away at Everton.
Born in Vannes, France, Marveaux played for two local sides at youth level - AS Menimur and Vannes OC. In 2001, at the age of 15, he signed a youth contract at Rennes to be part of their Academy.
After coming through the ranks at the Route de Lorient, he signed a professional contract in the summer of 2006 and was officially promoted to the senior team for the 2006/07 campaign.
Marveaux made his Rennes - and professional - debut on 5th August, 2006, in a league match against Lille, and scored his first goal just a couple of months later in a victory over Auxerre.
He made 118 appearances for the club over a five-season spell, scoring 20 goals in the process, before his move to Newcastle United.
Marveaux was a regular for France Under 21s, winning 11 caps and finding the back of the net four times. He is yet to make his senior bow for Les Bleus.
