Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez was Newcastle United's first signing in the 2008 close season.

The right-sided attacker joined the Magpies from Spanish outfit RCD Mallorca on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee. Gutierrez has the nickname "Spiderman" for wearing the superhero's webbed mask during flamboyant goal celebrations.

Jonas began his career with Velez Sarsfield in his native Argentina in 2001, helping the club win the Primera Division title in 2005 before moving to Spain.

He won his first international cap against France in February 2007 and is now a regular in the Argentina team bidding to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. A shoulder injury sustained against Peru on 10 September put a halt to his bright start to his United career. Scored his first International goal v France in Marseille on 11 February 2009.

Hit his first United goal, in his 45th outing for the Magpies, against Peterborough on 7 November 2009. Made 3 appearances for Argentina in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
