Gabriel Obertan signed for Newcastle on 9th August, 2011, just days before the start of the 2011/12 campaign.

The winger arrived from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal for Newcastle United, and made his debut four days later in the season opener against Arsenal, coming off the substitutes' bench to replace Demba Ba at half-time.

Obertan didn't have to wait long for his full bow, however, as he was handed a start the following weekend away at Sunderland as United triumphed 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Early Days

Born in Pantin, France, Obertan began his career at local club Paris-Pantin before moving on to Paris FC in 2002, aged 13.

A move to Paris Saint-Germain swiftly followed, and he soon switched again, this time to the famous Clairefontain academy which has produced some of France's brightest talents.

After a year at Clairfontaine, Obertan signed for Bordeaux and quickly progressed through their ranks, signing a professional contract at the start of the 2006/07 season.

His professional debut came on 30th September, 2006, at the age of 17, when he came off the substitutes' bench during a defeat against Valenciennes. His first goal came on 22nd April, 2007, as Bordeaux triumphed 2-0 away at Saint-Etienne, and his debut season yielded 23 appearances in all competitions, with the one goal.

In January 2009, Obertan headed out on loan to Lorient, where he made 17 appearances and scored twice, and the youngster's form alerted Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed the winger at the start of July that year.

Obertan's debut for the Red Devils came on 27th October, 2009, away at Barnsley in the fourth round of the Carling Cup, with his Premier League bow coming four days later against Blackburn Rovers.

His only goal for Manchester United came on 2nd November, 2010 as they won 3-0 at Bursaspor in the Champions League.

International Career

Obertan has represented France at Under 16, Under 17, Under 18, Under 19 and Under 21 level. His first Under 21 cap came on 11th February, 2009, against Tunisia, and broke his duck on 31st March, 2009, in a friendly against England.
