Tottenham v Newcastle: Key Moments

NUFC Logo Newcastle United FC

The moments which mattered from Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Bale 5, 78)
Newcastle United 1 (Gouffran 24)

WHISTLE-MDC-icons97mins: Full-time - Newcastle have lost to a Gareth Bale-inspired Tottenham. He was the difference between the two sides with two goals and some thrilling play but United did well and almost snatched a late equaliser through Shola Ameobi.

96mins: Krul makes a great save, tipping a shot from the brilliant Bale around the post, but it looks as though the Welshman has already done enough to win the game for his team.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons94mins: Ameobi is now booked for dissent - no bookings for 90 minutes and now there have been two in four, both for Newcastle players. Then a Dempsey cross is half-cleared by Coloccini but it hits Bale, who then blazes over with the goal at his mercy.

93mins: Livermore pings in a free-kick and Dempsey heads well wide. Then, from Krul's goal kick, Newcastle almost snatch an equaliser - Ameobi tried to poke the ball beyond Lloris but the keeper made a vital block.

SUB-MDC-icons92mins: Dembele now comes off for Jake Livermore in the final change of the day.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90mins: Yohan Cabaye is deservedly booked for a late tackle on Dembele as the board goes up for seven minutes of stoppage time.

87mins: A long ball from Assou-Ekotto finds Bale, who nutmegs Taylor and then shoots with Krul making a fine fingertip save to keep the game alive.

SUB-MDC-icons86mins: The last throw of the Newcastle dice sees Shola Ameobi introduced for Jonas Gutierrez, with United going to a 4-4-2 with Ameobi alongside Cisse.

SUB-MDC-icons82mins: Krul comes for a Bale corner but is beaten to the punch by Dempsey, whose header goes just wide. Then Cheick Tiote comes on for James Perch.

GOAL-MDC-icons78mins - TOTTENHAM GOAL (2-1): Out of nowhere, the hosts take the lead. Taylor tried to steal the ball off Adebayor but the Togo striker got a touch and Coloccini was slow to deal with the loose ball as Bale chased it. By the time he did, it was too late as the Welshman had stormed through and although Krul got a touch with his leg to the winger's low shot from a narrow angle, it rolled over the line.

76mins: Santon rolls the ball inside for Cabaye, who goes for goal from 25 yards but his effort flies over.

SUB-MDC-icons75mins: Another change for the hosts as they look to win this game - Kyle Naughton is off and Benoit Assou-Ekotto is on. Then a driving run from Bale results in a low strike which Krul does well to block with his legs.

SUB-MDC-icons69mins: Tottenham make their first change - Emmanuel Adebayor replaces Lewis Holtby.

65mins: Bale's right-wing corner is met by Steven Caulker but deflected behind for another flag-kick, which Krul claims.

SUB-MDC-icons59mins: After several minutes of treatment for Gouffran, on comes Marveaux. Gouffran is carried off on the stretcher and both sets of fans applaud him off, along with Alan Pardew. Today's attendance, meanwhile, is 36,244.

55mins: Goalscorer Gouffran is hurt - it's hard to see what caused it but a stretcher has been called and it looks like his afternoon is over. He has a bad cut to his calf, we're told. Sylvain Marveaux will replace him.

53mins: Mousa Dembele feeds Dempsey, who once again shoots from an improbable range and Krul gathers his low effort with some ease.

52mins: A Cabaye corner is headed clear by Bale but Steven Taylor retrieves it, setting himself up for a shot with an impressive first touch and Lloris is relieved that it's straight at him or he could have been in trouble.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle take kick-off for the second half and the match has now restarted.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Referee Phil Dowd's whistle sounds to signal the end of a decent half for Newcastle, who fell behind to Gareth Bale's fifth-minute free-kick but have recovered well since and equalised through Yoan Gouffran's first goal for the club midway through the half. Since then both sides have had half-chances but a draw is a fair scoreline at the break. Click here for the half-time report.

45mins: There will be just one minute of stoppage time added on.

44mins: Another long-range shot from Dempsey trickles wide - Newcastle are restricting Spurs to efforts from well outside the box at the moment.

42mins: Dempsey hits an ambitious strike from 30 yards which Taylor gets in the way of to send behind, and Newcastle do well to clear the corner.

40mins: Gutierrez crosses from the right and Cabaye runs onto it, with his control just slightly letting him down as the ball runs away from him allowing Lloris to gather at his feet. A slightly better touch from an admittedly difficult pass would have seen him in on goal.

36mins: A Davide Santon delivery is half cleared but only to Cabaye, whose stinging shot looks set for the back of the net until a great block from Michael Dawson sends it looping over the bar.

31mins: The busy Holtby chips a ball towards Bale on the left-hand angle of the box and his effort deflects behind. However Kyle Walker's corner is poor and United can regroup.

GOAL-MDC-icons24mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): A great counter-attacking goal from the Magpies as Yoan Gouffran opens his account for Newcastle. Jonas Gutierrez did well with a nice ball to the rampaging Moussa Sissoko on the right and his clever cut-back was perfect for Gouffran, 16 yards from goal, to send towards goal. His shot took a slight deflection to take it past Lloris but it was definitely Gouffran's goal and United deserve that for the way they have came back into this game. That's now two assists in three games from Sissoko, as well as the two goals he scored against Chelsea.

21mins: United almost fall two behind as Aaron Lennon skips down the right and cuts the ball back for Holtby, whose rising effort zips just over the bar.

19mins: Coloccini strides up from the back and clips in a wonderful ball towards Cisse, who sends a diving header wide when he may have expected to get the ball on target. At least Alan Pardew's side are now showing some encouraging signs after being second best in the opening quarter of an hour.

16mins: Yoan Gouffran wins a corner and Coloccini meets Yohan Cabaye's right-wing delivery but it's hacked away by a Spurs defender before it can test Hugo Lloris.

12mins: Dempsey charges down a clearance from Krul and the ball breaks to Bale, who fortunately fails to connect properly with his first-time effort and it rolls harmlessly wide.

10mins: Good pressure from Spurs forces Papiss Cisse to concede possession just outside his own area and the ball breaks for Lewis Holtby, on his home debut for Spurs, who blasts narrowly over the bar with a powerful strike. Andre Villas-Boas' men have certainly started well and Newcastle can't afford to be on the end of an early blitz like they were in this fixture last season.

GOAL-MDC-icons5mins - TOTTENHAM GOAL (1-0): Now the home side do have an early lead. Dempsey won a free kick as he fell after trying to turn Fabricio Coloccini and Bale stepped up to take it. With a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque stance, the Welshman curled it beyond Krul, who dived helplessly to his left but couldn't get near it. It's a great goal from a great player who is at the top of his game and Newcastle must now recover.

2mins: Almost an early opener for Spurs as Gareth Bale sprints down the left and sends in a dangerous low cross which Clint Dempsey gets a touch to but Tim Krul is able to push the ball away.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: We're underway at White Hart Lane with Tottenham taking kick-off. Newcastle are in burgundy with the home side in their traditional all-white kit.
