90+2 mins: 37 year-old keeper Olexandr Goryainov has arguably been the visitors' man of the match - he pulls off a fine reflex save to deny Cisse, who's diving header from a Santon cross eight yards out looked set to win the game.

90 mins: Juan Manuel Torres is booked after he upends Moussa Sissoko.


90 mins: There will be a minimum of three additional minutes at the end of this game.

87 mins: Willian is booked for simulation after the number 86 goes to ground theatrically in the penalty area under pressure from Gutierrez.

82 mins: Jonas Gutierrez tugs the shirt of the substitute Jaja, and the referee has no hesitation in brandishing a yellow card.

81 mins: The Ukranians make a second substitution, with Jonathan Cristaldo replaced by Jaja.


79 mins: Marveaux is challenged as he tries to run at goal, but the ball breaks loose to Sissoko who smacks a fierce drive that a diving Goryainov can't handle, with the 37 year old keeper happy to just palm the ball away.

78 mins: A second change for United, as Cheick Tiote makes way for Shola Ameobi. It looks like Ameobi is playing upfront now with Cisse dropping back into an attacking midfield role on the right.


75 mins: Marveaux clips in a delightful cross for Cisse, but the Magpies number nine can't keep the ball under control, as the cross strikes his chest and rolls out of play.


73 mins: DISALLOWED GOAL. United have a second goal ruled out for offside tonight and it's Cisse who is denied once again. Yanga-Mbiwa sends in an inviting cross from the right which Cisse converts with precision, but the jubilant celebrations are cut short as the assistant referee raises his flag.

72 mins: Marlos, a threat for the yellows in the first half, is substituted and Willian comes on to replace him.


70 mins: Marveaux intercepts a mis-judged pass from Fininho and bursts towards goal but his second touch is slightly too heavy and Goryainov comes off his line to make a block and snuff out the danger.


65 mins: A typically industrious run from Santon results in the Italian full-back pulling a low ball across for Cisse, who's first time effort with his left foot is beaten away by Goryainov in the Metalist goal.


62 mins: Alan Pardew shuffles his pack for the first time this evening as he replaces Gabriel Obertan with Sylvain Marveaux.


60 mins: Gutierrez curls a low shot a few yards wide of Goryainov's left hand post from just outside the penalty area as yellow smoke from a flare let off in the South-East corner of the ground swirls around in the air just above the players.


51 mins: Santon's cross from the left flank is met by a stooping header from a Metalist defender and the ball rolls to Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who misses out on a goal on his full debut as he fires over from 18 yards out.

49 mins: Sosa sends in a whipped delivery from a right wing corner but Fininho angles his header just wide of the target from around 10 yards out.


46 mins: Cisse collects an excellent 40 yard diagonal pass from Cabaye, but his first touch forces him wide and the striker's rasping effort zips over the bar.

45 mins: United kick-off for the second half, attacking the Gallowgate End. There were no substitutions by either side at the interval.

FIRST HALF UPDATES


45+1 mins: HALF-TIME. The referee calls an end to the first half with a shrill blast on his whistle and the teams go in at the break all square.


45 mins: There will be a minimum of one additional minute at the end of this half.


42 mins: Sissoko exchanges passes with Yanga-Mbiwa, collecting a dinked return ball into the box but Goryainov comes off his line to deny the French International from getting a shot away.


40 mins: Marlos, who has been busy and lively thus far, slips a pass forward for Sosa and the Metalist captain spears a fierce shot high across the face of Krul's goal.


38 mins: Cabaye's free-kick, taken from just inside the United half, is nodded inside by Steven Taylor. After a spot of pinball when a Metalist player's clearance strikes a teammate, Obertan has a shot from 15 yards that Cisse diverts towards goal but it's hooked away by a Ukranian defender


36 mins: The diminutive, stocky figure of Marlos slaloms his way past Santon and ripples the side-netting with a shot from an acute angle.


34 mins: After a cagey opening, the supporters here are seeing chances appear at both ends at regular intervals now. Cleiton Xavier has a pop at goal from just outside the box and although it's on target, Krul makes a fairly comfortable low save down to his right.

32 mins: Yohan Cabaye is cautioned by referee Tom Harald Hagen for impeding Jonathan Cristaldo as the two players compete for the ball in the air.


30 mins: Cisse should cap a lively spell in this match with a goal but he can't as the Senegalese forward is denied by a good save from Goryainov. Cabaye's through-ball is weighted perfectly for Cisse to latch on to but the visitor's keeper sprints towards the edge of his box and makes a fine block.


28 mins: Kharkiv attack down the left and Krul pulls off a fine one-handed save down to his left from a header by Brazilian midfielder Cleiton Xavier, who meets a cross from 10 yards out. 

27 mins: Cheick Tiote is issued with a yellow card after he upends Marlos an inch or two in from the right touchline, just inside Kharkiv's half.


22 mins: DISALLOWED GOAL. The hosts have the ball in the net through Papiss Cisse but a late flag from the assistant referee denies United's frontman the opening goal. Obertan's pass over the top found Sissoko, who ran clear and squared a pass for Cisse to turn in. Replays indicate that Sissoko was in an onside position when the pass was played.


20 mins: Kharkiv attacking midfielder Marlos jinks in from the right wing and plays a cute reverse pass into the path of Sosa. The visitors' skipper shoots from a tight angle but is denied by Krul, who blocks with his legs.


16 mins: After a tepid opening quarter of an hour, Alan Pardew's men launch a dangerous attack. Gutierrez takes a quick throw to Moussa Sissoko, who finds Obertan with a pass towards the left flank. The former Manchester United man cuts infield and shoots from the edge of the D towards Goryainov's right-hand post but the ball rolls narrowly wide.


14 mins: Strong running from Jonas Gutierrez earns the Magpies a corner after the midfielder's cross is blocked. Cabaye's centre is nodded away to Gutierrez, who miscues a shot and the ball dribbles wide.


8 min: Davide Santon is forced to concede a corner as he blocks a cross from Edmar. The outswinging corner reaches Marlos, who scuffs a volley towards goal that Fabricio Coloccini easily hacks clear.


7 min: Gabriel Obertan dribbles with the ball down the left then cuts infield and offloads to Yohan Cabaye, who wins a corner for United. The United number four takes the set piece but it's nodded away at the near post.

 1 min: We are underway here at St.James' Park. United, in their black and white shirts, black shorts and black socks are kicking towards the Leazes End in the first half. Visitors Metalist Kharkiv are kitted out in an all-yellow kit apart from a blue trim.
