Team-news: debut for Tonali at Rangers

Sandro Tonali will make his Newcastle United debut this evening ahead of the Magpies' pre-season friendly clash against Rangers (kick-off 7.45pm BST).

The Magpies travel to Glasgow to face the Scottish Premiership outfit in a testimonial match in honour of former Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who made over 500 competitive appearances for the Light Blues and will be backed by 8,000 travelling away fans at Ibrox this evening.

Eddie Howe has made seven changes from the side which claimed a 3-2 comeback victory against National League side Gateshead on Saturday as Tonali makes his highly-anticipated bow since joining United from AC Milan earlier this month, partnering Elliot Anderson, who scored against the Heed last weekend, and Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park.

Goalkeeper Loris Karius is handed a start in-between the sticks behind a four-man defence containing Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman and Matt Targett.

Miguel Almirón and Jamal Lewis are likely to feature on the respective right and left flanks to support striker Callum Wilson, who scored 18 Premier League goals for the Magpies last term.

Howe has a number of strong options to deploy from the substitutes’ bench, including the likes of Brazil international Bruno Guimarães, Swedish forward Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, who won the European Under-21 Championship with England Under-21s in July.

Both Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie are goalkeeping backup while Dan Burn, Javier Manquillo, Paul Dummett, Harrison Ashby and Alex Murphy are all defensive reinforcements.

Jay Turner-Cooke, who scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win against Gateshead, is named on the bench along with young trio Lewis Miley, Joe White and Ben Parkinson.

Please note that the squad numbers worn by Howe’s side are still subject to change ahead of the new campaign.

Newcastle United: Loris Karius, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Matt Target, Sean Longstaff, Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Miguel Almirón, Jamal Lewis, Callum Wilson.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Mark Gillespie, Harrison Ashby, Dan Burn, Javier Manquillo, Paul Dummett, Alex Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães, Lewis Miley, Joe White, Jay Turner-Cooke, Ben Parkinson, Alexander Isak.
