Morecambe v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The big moments from the Globe Arena, where the Ameobi brothers got a goal each to help Newcastle through to the third round of the Capital One Cup

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Morecambe 0
Newcastle United 2 (Shola Ameobi 84, Sammy Ameobi 90+3)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

GOAL-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2): It's game, set and match as Sammy Ameobi dribbles into the box and finishes well to put Newcastle into the third round. Both Ameobis are on the scoresheet and they have been the difference tonight, although Curtis Good was arguably United's man of the match closely followed by Rob Elliot. The whistle goes moments later and Morecambe's players are rightly cheered off, but the Magpies go through.

90+2mins: Goalkeeper Roche comes forward as Morecambe win a corner but Elliot punches away.

90mins: There will be three minutes added on.

89mins: Ben Arfa drags a shot wide for Newcastle, who will now wait to see how much injury time is signalled.

SUB-MDC-icons88mins: A substitution for each side - first Stewart Drummond comes off for Joe Mwasile then Sylvain Marveaux is replaced by Moussa Sissoko.

GOAL-MDC-icons84mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): At last, Newcastle have broken the deadlock. Ben Arfa rolls a clever ball into the feet of Shola Ameobi, who has his back to goal but spins his man as he's done so many times before during his United career. His shot may well have gone in anyway but takes a deflection to beat Roche and send the fans behind that goal wild with delight.

82mins: United pile on the pressure with a Marveaux free-kick from the left which Morecambe just can't clear until Sammy Ameobi sends a tame shot wide.

SUB-MDC-icons77mins: Alex Kenyon is on for Morecambe as manager Jim Bentley seeks fresh legs. Andrew Fleming makes way.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons75mins: Samson is booked for a foul just inside the Newcastle half on Bigirimana.

73mins: On what is his full debut for Newcastle, left-back Dummett looks up and has a crack from 25 yards - and it's a good effort too, with Roche diving to his right and relieved to see it crack back off an advertising hoarding rather than the net.

72mins: Williams shoots wide for Morecambe, who are beginning to look a little tired now but show no signs of lying down.

SUB-MDC-icons71mins: The fans have been calling for it and now on comes Hatem Ben Arfa, a player more suited to the global stage than the Globe Arena but capable of giving Newcastle the edge tonight. He replaces Yoan Gouffran.

68mins: Marveaux spots the run of Shola Ameobi and tries to pick him out with a crossfield ball but Roche is able to push the ball away from the head of the striker, who then shoots wide when closely marked moments later.

67mins: Sampson makes room in the box for a shot but Debuchy is snapping away and the striker's effort is off target.

64mins: Now Shola Ameobi shoots from 20 yards but his shot is also the wrong side of the post. Can United make this spell of pressure count?

63mins: A corner from Marveaux is partially cleared as far as Sammy Ameobi, who lines up a low shot but it flashes wide. Newcastle are starting to threaten.

61mins: Sammy Ameobi wins a free-kick and Marveaux's delivery from the left is attacked by Dummett. It finds its way to Gosling at the far post and he sends over a great cross, again towards Dummett, and although it's half-cleared, Marveaux is there to thunder a volley over the bar.

SUB-MDC-icons57mins: Marcus Marshall is on in place of Padraig Amond, who was a constant danger to Newcastle in the first half.

54mins: Sammy Ameobi plays a great ball down the left to release Paul Dummett but the left-back's cross is intercepted by Roche and as he launches a swift attack, the ball is laid off for Jack Sampson to strike narrowly wide with the outside of his boot.

49mins: Shola Ameobi is played in on goal with only Roche to beat but sends his shot into the Newcastle end when one would normally have backed the striker to sidefoot home.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Morecambe are out first for the second period but it's Newcastle who get us underway, attacking towards the Bay Radio Stand where their supporters are housed. Shola Ameobi is on in place of Haris Vuckic, who struggled to get into the game.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: It's half-time and for the second match in a row, Newcastle are drawing 0-0 at the break. League Two Morecambe have created more chances than West Ham did on Saturday, though, and have really had a go at the Magpies who have had a couple of openings themselves. Click here for the half time report.

45mins: There will be a minimum of two minutes of added time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons41mins: Marveaux is booked for conceding a free-kick and Williams' effort requires pushing behind by Elliot, who has had more genuine saves to make than his opposite number up until now.

40mins: Gosling's run is partially halted by a defender but Gouffran regains possession and his low shot is deflected, taking some of the sting away and allowing Roche to gather.

39mins: Another Marveaux corner is half-cleared to Ameobi and this time the winger makes room for a shot which looked to be going in until Kevin Ellison threw himself in the way to block.

36mins: Gouffran wins a free-kick and Gael Bigirimana steps up to smash a shot goalwards, only for Roche to push the ball over the bar. He then fists Marveaux's corner out to Ameobi, who shoots horribly wide.

33mins: Not for the first time, Amond is denied by Elliot. The forward finds himself 12 yards from goal and hits a low drive which Elliot parries and then punches away as Morecambe look for the loose ball.

30mins: Newcastle switch off to allow what looked to be a harmless ball down the line carry all the way to Amond, who hammers a shot towards goal and sees Elliot make a good stop to push it away from the top corner. Was he offside? Not according to the assistant referee and United were almost caught out.

28mins: Debuchy delivers from the right again and Gosling gets his head to it, but he has to generate all of the power himself and can't get enough to really trouble Roche, who falls to his right to save easily.

22mins: The home fans go wild - they think they've scored as Ryan Williams' corner is headed goalwards by Padraig Amond but blocked on the line - just - by Ameobi. He may even have handled it but he kept it out one way or another and Alan Pardew can breath a sigh of relief.

20mins: Debuchy sends over a decent cross from the right and Gouffran rises to meet it but completely misdirects his header and sends it some way wide of the intended target.

15mins: Yoan Gouffran clips the ball over Roche after Ameobi's ball down the line appeared to have caught out the home defence, but the flag was up against the former Bordeaux forward and although the ball hits the back of the net, it remains 0-0.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons12mins: Mathieu Debuchy is poleaxed by a late tackle from Fleming and referee Mark Haywood has a decision to make - to book the Morecambe man or send him off. He goes for the former and it's probably the right choice, although it was a borderline call.

10mins: An almightly goalmouth scramble causes problems for United as a corner is headed back across goal by Mark Hughes, the Shrimps skipper, but blocked by Gosling before the Magpies eventually clear their lines.

8mins: Morecame work the ball well to tee up Andrew Fleming for a shot and his low effort tests Elliot, who has to get down sharply and grab the ball at the second attempt. That has lifted the home fans, not that they really needed it - they're having a great time at the moment.

4mins: Sylvain Marveaux plays the ball to Dan Gosling, who then finds Sammy Ameobi before sprinting into the box to get on the end of the England under-21 international's cross from the left. Alas, he heads wide of Barry Roche's goal.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Balloons, cheerleaders, cheesy music and a capacity crowd at this tight little stadium - this has all the hallmarks of a proper cup tie. The home supporters are right up for this but so are the Newcastle fans, around 2,000 of them packed behind Rob Elliot's goal as Morecambe get the game started here at the Globe Arena. There was a nice touch from the hosts before kick-off - the tannoy played Local Hero and United include three Academy products in the starting XI and a further three on the bench. Teenager Adam Armstrong also travelled but missed out on the 18-man squad.

Morecambe (4-3-3): Barry Roche; Andrew Wright, Andy Parrish, Mark Hughes (c), Tony Diagne; Ryan Williams, Stewart Drummond (Joe Mwasile 88), Andrew Fleming (Alex Kenyon 77); Padraig Amond (Marcus Marshall 57), Jack Sampson, Kevin Ellison
