Team news: Young trio start at Richmond Park

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Young trio Víctor Fernández, Sean Longstaff and Josef Yarney all start for Newcastle United against St. Patrick’s Athletic in the Magpies’ opening pre-season friendly.

Though Fernández featured at first-team level in March’s non-competitive clash with Royal Antwerp in Spain, it is a first taste of senior action for both Longstaff and Yarney.

The latter can be expected to join Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo at the back, with Rolando Aarons and Matt Ritchie operating out wide.

It is anticipated that Longstaff will take up a more central role, alongside Mohamed Diamé. Ayoze Pérez – handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Jamaal Lascelles – is likely to provide support to frontman Joselu.

There are three goalkeepers in the Magpies’ squad of 21, with Karl Darlow handed the starting berth. Both Martin Dúbravka and Matz Sels – who spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Anderlecht – have been named on the bench.

The likes of Dwight Gayle, Jonjo Shelvey and DeAndre Yedlin all feature among the list of substitutes, too, with tonight’s game kicking off at 7.45pm.

Newcastle United: Karl Darlow, Josef Yarney, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo, Rolando Aarons, Matt Ritchie, Mohamed Diamé, Sean Longstaff, Víctor Fernández, Ayoze Pérez, Joselu.

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, Matz Sels, DeAndre Yedlin, Ciaran Clark, Kenedy, Jonjo Shelvey, Callum Roberts, Christian Atsu, Adam Armstrong, Dwight Gayle.
