Team news: Manquillo in for Yedlin

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Javier Manquillo comes in for DeAndre Yedlin as Newcastle United look to pick up their first win of the Premier League campaign against Cardiff City this lunchtime.

Though he returned to training ahead of the Magpies’ trip to South Wales, Yedlin – who landed awkwardly late in the day against Tottenham Hotspur a week ago – has not travelled with Rafa Benítez’s squad.

Instead, it is Manquillo who begins the game at right back – only the Spaniard’s fourth Premier League start of the calendar year.

Otherwise, United are unchanged from the side who lost narrowly to Spurs at St. James’ Park. Manquillo joins skipper Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett in the backline, with Martin Dúbravka between the sticks.

Mohamed Diamé again partners Jonjo Shelvey in central midfield, with Matt Ritchie on the right and Brazilian Kenedy on the left. Joselu – the Magpies’ marksman against Tottenham – starts on his own up front, with Ayoze Pérez deployed just behind.

Jacob Murphy – whose brother Josh features in Cardiff’s line-up today – is among Newcastle’s substitues, joining recent signings Federico Fernández, Yoshinori Mutō and Salomón Rondón, as well as Isaac Hayden and goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Javier Manquillo, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Mohamed Diamé, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Kenedy, Ayoze Pérez, Joselu.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Federico Fernández, Isaac Hayden, Ki Sung-yueng, Jacob Murphy, Yoshinori Mutō, Salomón Rondón.
