Ivan Toney helped Barnsley lift the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in a thrilling Wembley final on Sunday.

The Tykes triumphed 3-2 over Oxford United in front of more than 59,000 fans at the national stadium, and Toney was introduced from the substitutes' bench after 66 minutes.

At that point, the game was level at 1-1 but Toney had an immediate impact, connecting with a cross and seeing the ball eventually land at the feet of Ashley Fletcher, who lashed home.

There was still time for a further goal from each team but Barnsley held on to win the competition for the first time in their history.

In France, Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin both played the full 90 minutes for Marseille, who fell to a 2-1 defeat at Bastia in Ligue 1.

The duo started in supporting roles of ex-Sunderland man Steven Fletcher but it was a disappointing defeat for Marseille, who now sit 13th in the table after 32 games.

Back on home soil, in the Championship, Sammy Ameobi's Cardiff City kept up their play-off push with a 2-1 home victory over Derby County. However, the Magpies' Academy product had to settle for a place on the bench and was not called upon.

In League One, Gael Bigirimana was handed a rare start for Coventry City, who played out a goalless draw at high-flying Gillingham.

The Burundi international midfielder played the full match and was booked, while fellow United teammate Adam Armstrong came off the bench in the 61st minute but was unable to break the deadlock in the stalemate.

Liam Smith was a late substitute for Blackpool, who enhanced their chances of League One survival with a crucial 2-0 home win over Southend.

The midfielder entered the fray in the 70th minute as the Tangerines moved on to 45 points from their 41 games to date - four clear of the drop zone.

Wigan top League One following a 5-1 thrashing of Shrewsbury Town but there was no game time for Haris Vuckic, who had to watch on from the Latics' bench for the duration.

In League Two, Alex Gilliead was a second half substitute for Carlisle but could not prevent the Cumbrians slipping to a 1-0 defeat at fellow promotion-chasers Portsmouth.

The England under-20 forward was introduced immediately after Pompey grabbed the only goal of the game, in the 57th minute, but could not inspire his team to a share of the spoils.

Fellow Mapies loanee Macaulay Gillesphey was an unused substitute for Carlisle.

York City picked up a 1-1 draw at home against Kevin Nolan's Leyton Orient, but neither Kyle Cameron or Lubo Satka were involved in the matchday squad for the Minstermen.

Finally, in the National League, teenage goalkeeper Brendan Pearson was not named in Gateshead's squad for their 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Torquay United.
