Loan Watch: Gilliead Impresses For Cumbrians

Written by Newcastle Utd

A round-up of the United loan stars who were in action over the weekend at their respective clubs

Alex Gilliead made an eye-catching debut for Carlisle United on Saturday, with a pair of assists in the Cumbrians' 2-2 draw at York City in League Two.

The England Under-20 international, who is on loan at Brunton Park for a month along with Magpies' teammate Macaulay Gillesphey, was handed a starting spot by boss Keith Curle.

And Gilliead didn't disappoint on his first experience of senior competitive football, sending Tom Miller clear after just 26 minutes to put Carlisle one up.

The Cumbrians doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time, and Gilliead played a big part in it again.

As York failed to clear their lines from a long throw-in, Gilliead saw his deflected shot fall kindly for Troy Archibald-Henville, who made no mistake from close range.

Gilliead was replaced after 64 minutes and the Minsterman went on to score twice in three minutes to get back into the contest and secure a point. Fellow United youngster Gillesphey was an unused subtitute.

"I've been around football for a while now but this is the biggest game I've ever been involved in," 19-year-old Gilliead told Carlisle's official website.

"You've just got to enjoy it and try to do what you normally do. I did get a bit nervous but it was all in a good way.

"Playing games like this is what it's all about. When I walked out onto the pitch and saw how many fans we'd brought, that was amazing.

"I don't think it's fully sunk in yet that I've just made my debut. I don't think things like this ever fully sink in.

"Hopefully people have seen what I can do and I'll be able to help put a few more smiles on faces this season."

Also in League Two, teenage goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline as Crawley Town entertained Yeovil Town.

The stopper was helpless to prevent a stunning 25-yard strike winning the game for the Glovers, with Crawley now just outside the relegation zone in the fourth tier.

In League One, Adam Armstrong scored his sixth goal of the season - and the only goal of the game - as Coventry City recorded a 1-0 win at home to Chesterfield on Saturday.

The in-form front man netted after 50 minutes, stroking home Jacob Murphy's through-ball, and that was enough to seal maximum points for the Sky Blues.

Elsewhere, Shane Ferguson was a 69th-minute substitute for Millwall in the League One home defeat to Southend United.

When Northern Ireland international Ferguson entered the fray at the New Den, the Lions were already 2-0 down and that's the way it remained.

In the Championship, Sammy Ameobi was rewarded for his recent impressive form with a start for Cardiff City, but they suffered a last-minute 2-1 defeat at struggling Rotherham United.

The homegrown forward played 86 minutes of the contest at the New York Stadium, which was eventually settled by an own goal with just seconds remaining.

Finally, in Ligue 1, Remy Cabella started Marseille's 1-1 draw at home to Lyon but was withdrawn at half-time having been booked in the first period..
