Loan Watch: Bluebirds Beaten

Written by Newcastle Utd

Sammy Ameobi played the full 90 minutes for Cardiff but was unable to inspire the Bluebirds to victory at Birmingham

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Sammy Ameobi played the full 90 minutes for Cardiff City on Friday, but was unable to inspire the Bluebirds to victory at Birmingham City in the Championship.

Wide man Ameobi has had to be content with a place among the substitutes in recent weeks but was promoted to the starting line-up for the St. Andrew's.

Taking up a role on the right flank, the Academy product looked lively throughout, putting in a number of dangerous crosses and also firing wide when well-placed.

And the game was settled by a controversial penalty in favour of Birmingham right on the stroke of half-time, as Ameobi and Co dropped out of the play-off places and travelled back to South Wales empty-handed.

In League One, Adam Armstrong and Gael Bigirimana both featured for high-flying Coventry City, who missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Burton by recording a 1-1 draw with Oldham on Saturday.

The pair both played the entire contest at the Ricoh Arena as Aaron Martin's header was cancelled out in stoppage time by Oldham forward Danny Philliskirk.

In the same division, Ivan Toney was unable to fire Barnsley to victory against promotion-chasers Wigan Athletic, as they slipped to a 2-0 home defeat.

The teenage striker played for 75 minutes before being replaced by Simeon Jackson, while Haris Vuckic was not involved from the Latics.

Shane Ferguson was a half-time substitute for Millwall, who fell to a 3-0 home defeat against Gillingham.

By the time the Northern Ireland international entered the fray at the New Den, Millwall were already 2-0 down and had been reduced to ten men.

In League Two, Alex Gilliead missed Carlisle United's 3-0 triumph over Notts County but Macaulay Gillesphey started and impressed at left-back.

The young defender played the full 90 minutes for the Cumbrians, who kept up their promotion charge.

Finally, across the channel, Remy Cabella's Marseille recorded a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux. The playmaker was replaced in injury-time of the Ligue 1 fixture.
