Loan Watch: Armstrong On Target Again

Written by Newcastle Utd

Adam Armstrong was again among the goals for Barnsley on Saturday in the Tykes' 2-1 defeat to Reading

Adam Armstrong was again among the goals for Barnsley on Saturday in the Tykes' 2-1 defeat to Reading in the Sky Bet Championship.

The on-loan Magpies frontman, who scored a stunning winner in his side's win over Preston North End last week, started for Paul Heckingbottom's men after recovering from a knock sustained in their 4-0 midweek win over Wolves.

He picked up a yellow card at Oakwell, and pulled one back after 87 minutes, but earlier strikes from Gareth McCleary and John Swift earned the Royals the three points.

In League One, full back Jamie Sterry started for Coventry City in their 0-0 draw with Oldham at the Ricoh Arena, but was stretchered off just after the hour after an aerial collision.

The 20-year-old was replaced by Devon Kelly-Evans after suffering a head injury as the Sky Blues picked up a point against the Latics.

Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic made his Bradford City debut in their 1-1 draw at home to Bristol Rovers.

James Meredith put Stuart McCall's men ahead before Vuckic was introduced in place of Billy Clarke with seven minutes remaining.

But Charlie Colkett earned the visitors a point with a late equaliser just four minutes before the end, though Vuckic almost won it at the end with a header that was saved by goalkeeper Kelle Roos.

Sammy Ameobi played the full 90 minutes as Bolton Wanderers were beaten 1-0 at Walsall.

Centre half Jason McCarthy gave the Saddlers the lead early on, and though both sides were reduced to ten men after Joe Edwards and Kechi Anderson were dismissed, Ameobi couldn't help the Trotters draw level.

Forward Ivan Toney, meanwhile, didn't feature as Shrewsbury Town were beaten 1-0 at home by Scunthorpe United. Defender David Mirfin bagged the winner for the Iron.

In League Two, Macaulay Gillesphey played the first half of Carlisle United's 2-2 draw at Blackpool on Saturday.

The centre back was replaced by Mark Ellis at the break as Kyle Vassell and Armand Gnanduillet drew the Seasiders level after Charlie Wyke and Michael Raynes had given the Cumbrians a 2-0 lead.

Fellow defender Kyle Cameron was an unused substitute for Newport County, as Warren Feeney's men were beaten 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers after strikes from ex-Magpie James Coppinger and Andy Williams.

Tom Heardman also didn't make it off the bench as Hartlepool United were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Mansfield Town. The big forward is yet to make his Football League debut.

Forward Alex Gilliead was brought on as a 71st-minute substitute with Luton Town trailing 1-0 away at Crawley Town, but he couldn't stop the Hatters suffering an eventual 2-0 defeat at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

And young goalkeeper Paul Woolston again started in goal for Darlington, as they bowed out of the FA Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Lancaster City at the Giant Axe.

The remainder of United's players who are out on loan could feature for their clubs tomorrow, with PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Saint-Etienne, Marseille, BSC Young Boys and Osasuna all in action on Sunday.
