Aston Villa 1 (Benteke 67)
Newcastle United 2 (Ben Arfa 18, Gouffran 73)
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+4mins: Newcastle keep the ball and run the clock down with some ease to earn an excellent away win at Villa Park. A goal in each half from Frenchmen Hatem Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran trumped Christian Benteke's header and while the boos ring out from the home supporters, the Magpies faithful can celebrate. 90mins: Fourth official Stephen Martin's board is up - there will be four long minutes of stoppage time.
88mins: Both managers make a change - Villa's Weimann comes off for Aleksandar Tonev while Sammy Ameobi is introduced for Newcastle in place of Cabaye.
85mins: Ben Arfa races into the box from Cabaye's pass and after a superb piece of skill he appears to be blocked off by Vlaar, but referee Dean waves away Newcastle's appeals for a penalty.
84mins: Gouffran again runs at the defence and shoots but this time his strike isn't the best and he doesn't get enough behind it to trouble the Villa keeper.
80mins: Delph sizes up a shot and hits one from 25 yards. Krul has to fly to his left just in case but it skims just wide.
79mins: More good work from Gouffran sees him slide the ball to Tiote in a central position and the Ivorian enforcer's first time shot is well saved by Guzan, who gathers at the second attempt.
78mins: Gouffran glides forwards and picks out Cisse with a great cross which the Senegalese star diverts towards goal with his head but can only hit the side-netting. Some of the away fans thought that was in and perhaps it should have been.
73mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): A rotund, topless gentleman was in the middle of goading the Newcastle fans as Ben Arfa picked up the ball, jinked inside and hit a low shot which Guzan could only parry. It falls straight to Yoan Gouffran, however, and the French forward slots home with a composed finish to stun the Villa fans - and one in particular, who is quickly searching for his seat and a shirt.
71mins: Debuchy is shown the yellow card after a late tackle on Antonio Luna near the touchline and it looked like a pretty poor tackle from the Frenchman, who has been very impressive at right-back. Mike Dean thought a booking was sufficient, however, and Debuchy becomes the third United player to earn a caution.
67mins - ASTON VILLA GOAL (1-1): Just as Libor Kozak comes on for Karim El Ahmadi, Villa are level with their first effort on target. A flat corner from Westwood is powerfully headed home by Benteke, who shrugged off his marker and nipped in front of Krul to score.
64mins: Ben Arfa drives the ball across goal for Vurnon Anita to meet. His shot is blocked but breaks for Cisse, whose effort is also deflected away. United are pushing for a second, rather than trying to hold onto what they have.
63mins: Remy's full debut is over and he is replaced by Yoan Gouffran. The on-loan frontman didn't look fully fit but showed glimpses of genuine class and played a key role in what remains the only goal of the game.
62mins: Villa work the ball across to Lowton on the right but the full-back, who scored one of the goals of last season against Stoke, spoons the ball and Krul is able to clutch it in mid air.
61mins: An inventive corner from United, as tested in pre-season, sees Cabaye float the ball to Debuchy whose volley flashes agonisingly wide.
60mins: United are stepping it up a level once more and shortly after Cisse just failed to pick out Remy at the far post, Ben Arfa cuts inside and stings the palms of Guzan with a powerful drive.
57mins: Cabaye becomes the second Newcastle player to pick up a yellow card after arriving a split second late on Lowton.
55mins: Weimann gets in a cross from the right and Agbonlahor races in to meet it at the far post but somehow stabs wide when he looked certain to score his first of the campaign. That's a let-off for the Magpies - Agbonlahor hit the headlines for a charity match tackle on a member of One Direction last weekend but that shot was very much in the wrong direction.
53mins: Villa play their way into trouble as Cabaye closes their defence down and Remy gets the opportunity to shoot from 20 yards, but his weak shot is easily gathered by Guzan.
51mins: Delph slips the ball out to Weimann on the left hand side of the box but the Austrian elects to dink the ball across goal rather than shoot and Santon is able to get an important touch.
46mins: Villa get the second half started with no changes for either side at the break. One change is that Santon is back in his number three shirt, having worn a 'blood' shirt for most of the first period.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+3mins: Newcastle lead at half time through Hatem Ben Arfa's 18th minute goal and although Aston Villa have upped their game since then, United have been the better side. Tim Krul has yet to make a save as the Magpies have been strong at both ends. Click here for the half-time report.
45+2mins: Sissoko spreads the ball to Cabaye at the far post and his half-volley flashes just across goal. He scored at the same end here last season and came close there.
45mins: There will be a minimum of three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half.
43mins: A great chance for Villa as the speedy Weimann outstrips the Newcastle defence but sees Yanga-Mbiwa make up ground and ends up dragging his shot wide. The home side are ending the half on top, though, and it's important that Newcastle don't concede before the break.
41mins: The resulting free-kick, taken by Ashley Westwood, is headed clear by Sissoko but Villa recycle the ball and the ball is worked out to Matthew Lowton on the right. His fine cross is only patted away by Tim Krul and falls to Clark at the far post but the defender sidefoots into the side-netting.
40mins: Mike Dean books Yanga-Mbiwa for what seemed to be a hard but fair challege around 40 yards from the Newcastle goal.
38mins: Yanga-Mbiwa, who has been superb, blocks a shot from Benteke and Sissoko quickly breaks and floats the ball out to Remy on the left. He hurtles towards goal before firing over, but it's exciting to watch Newcastle breaking with such pace and purpose and something that they have been working on in training this week.
33mins: Villa's Fabian Delph is booked for a mistimed sliding tackle on Ben Arfa, who was back defending on the edge of his own box.
30mins: Ron Vlaar signals to the Villa bench that his central defensive partner Okore needs to come off, having picked up a knock in an innocuous coming together with Remy a few minutes earlier. A stretcher is called for but he is able to limp off, with Ciaran Clark replacing him.
24mins: Now Gabriel Agbonlahor finds Andreas Weimann inside the box but the Austrian's shot is blocked by Fabricio Coloccini. The hosts have responded well to going behind but United look determined to make it four clean sheets in a row.
22mins: Christian Benteke, Villa's bustling Belgian battering ram, tries to muscle his way through on goal and looks like he's about to do so until Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa expertly gets his body in between the forward and the goal to snuff out the danger. Superb defending from the Frenchman.
18 mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): United get their just reward for a fine start. Loic Remy, on his full debut, bursts down the left and cuts the ball back towards Cisse, whose touch finds Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman, ten yards out, smashes the ball past Guzan for his second in two games and the Magpies are in front.
12mins: Mathieu Debuchy takes a quick free kick which Jores Okore heads away but only as far as Cisse, whose shot from 22 yards is on target but lacks to the power to seriously trouble Guzan. Davide Santon then has to change his shirt after suffering a head injury and will wear a blank number five shirt instead of his usual number three.
10mins: Papiss Cisse tries to take the ball round Brad Guzan after an incisive Magpies move but the flag was already up against the man from Senegal. Cisse had taken advantage of a sloppy pass to find Moussa Sissoko, who offloaded to Yohan Cabaye and the Frenchman's first time into space allowed Cisse to sprint in on goal but he went a split second too early.
7mins: The opening exchanges have largely been dominated by Newcastle, who are playing some very nice football without really opening the Villans up. The home side did win an early corner, which United dealt with well, but so far it's been the Magpies asking the questions.
1min: After a two week break, the Barclays Premier League is back and Alan Pardew has selected an attacking line-up at Villa Park. The hosts, managed by Paul Lambert, have a similar approach so a great game could be in store. The Villans are in claret and blue with United wearing black and white and it's the Magpies who take kick-off, attacking towards the Holte End in this first period.
