The ball sails into the penalty area for a Newcastle player but a weak header is all that can be mustered – which Lloris grabs well. The referee blows his whistle for the final time tonight and Tottenham escape with a victory!

DeAndre Yedlin goes into the referee’s book after dragging down Lamela from behind after the Argentinian winger uses nifty footwork to get past the right-back.

The referee has indicated there will be an additional five minutes at the end of regulation time. 

Rose is played through on goal by Eriksen, but with only Dubravka to beat, the wing-back sends his shot directly at the goalkeeper who makes the crucial stop to keep Newcastle in with a chance.

Ritchie tries an audacious outside-of-the-boot cross which is cut out well by Sanchez. Possession returns to Newcastle who switch the attack to the other wing before the final ball is put out for a Lloris goal-kick following a poor attempt at goal. 

Trippier, shortly after returning to the pitch, has gone down again at a Lloris goal-kick and it looks as though he may be unable to continue.

The corner amounts to nothing as the ball is met first by a Newcastle player. It is cleared deep and eventually comes to the foot of Lloris, who sends it right back for Son who is called for a foul following an aerial duel in midfield.

Lascelles puts his head in the way of Son’s foot and clears the ball for a Tottenham corner instead of allowing the forward to take a volleyed effort from an acute angle inside the penalty area. 

With a half hour left to play, Newcastle’s players must be absolutely drained. They have been chasing shadows for most of the match, rarely getting a kick of the ball. Tottenham’s slow style today is now working to their advantage, as they are comfortably protecting their lead. 

Son finds Kane in the penalty area but the striker is crowded out and the ball goes back to the midfield line. Tottenham recycle play and go forward once again, but the attack breaks down with a Dubravka save on a weak Alli shot taken from just inside the area. 

HOW HAS NEWCASTLE NOT SCORED!? Yedlin sends a ball into the penalty area and Perez fluffs his shot from the six-yard area. Ritchie dives in to hammer home the rebound but Lloris closes down the space well. The ensuing corner is whipped in by Shelvey but volleyed wide of the goalkeeper’s post.

Eriksen swings in a corner from the right and its Wanyama who rises highest to meet it, but his header goes over the top of the crossbar.

Spurs are being pressed well in midfield by a disciplined Newcastle, which is forcing Tottenham to turn around and play it back to Lloris who then sends a long ball into the heart of the Magpie defence. There has been very little creativity from the home side despite Eriksen and Alli on the pitch.

Ayoze Perez has stayed down after a heavy challenge in midfield by Vertonghen. The striker is walking very gingerly, but it doesn’t seem serious enough for any treatment. Play restarts with a Newcastle free-kick in midfield.

IT SHOULD BE 1-0 TOTTENHAM! Kane latches onto Lloris’ drop-kick in the Newcastle penalty area and draws Dubravka out of his goal. The striker is unable to connect with the bouncing ball and he fluffs his volley, allowing the goalkeeper to grab it easily out of the air. 

Kane uses the set-piece to pass it along the box for Trippier who is waiting on the right-hand side of the box. The right-back curls in a cross that is met by Sissoko – but the midfielder sends his header over the crossbar. With five minutes until half time, it remains 0-0.

Eriksen wins a free-kick in a dangerous area after Gayle uses his shoulder to take down the Dane following a pass from Sissoko. 

The Spurs fans are urging their team forward, but Tottenham look comfortable retaining possession, passing it forward before turning around and sending it back. A long ball finally comes to Trippier, but the right-back strays offside and the linesman flags immediately. 

Vertonghen hits a cannon of a strike towards Dubravka’s goal but the goalkeeper makes a perfect catch at his near post.

Trippier bends a pass into the right side of the penalty area for Kane who gets by his markers, but Lejeune is once again in the perfect spot and he makes the interception.

Another chance for Newcastle as Gayle sends his header over the bar! The ball is swung in for the striker from the right, and its Gayle who rises highest, but his accuracy is lacking and Lloris can breathe a sigh of relief.

Back the other way, Ritchie takes his corner short for Shelvey and it immediately gets sent into the penalty area where Lascelles rises highest to meet it. A diving Lloris palms the effort away and keeps it in play, but the Spurs press forces Newcastle to go all the way back to Dubravka. 

WANYAMA SENDS IT OVER! The corner is half-cleared by Lascelles and it falls for Wanyama who blasts his volley well over Dubravka’s goal. The midfielder really should have done better there.

Son wins a throw-in after his cross for Kane is blocked by Ritchie on the left-hand side. Spurs opt to throw it backwards and rebuild from the back before getting it to Eriksen on the other wing who wins a corner-kick.

Vertonghen boots a Newcastle cross out of play for a corner which Shelvey takes to the penalty spot. Sissoko breaks away on a counter-attack before a brilliant slide tackle halts his progress. 

Tottenham are maintaining possession in Newcastle’s half, switching play from side-to-side, without much forward movement. The away side are doing very well taking away space and limiting Tottenham’s options on the ball.

OH SO CLOSE! Jonjo Shelvey’s curling effort strikes the outside of the post before going out for a goal-kick. It was almost perfect from Shelvey who is known for his brilliant dead-ball ability.

Newcastle are building pressure, holding possession just outside of the Spurs penalty area. The cross finally comes in for Gayle who gets the ball just outside the penalty area before he’s taken down by Sissoko. Now Newcastle have a set-piece in a dangerous area...

Eriksen’s effort is hit well but he is unable to beat Dubravka and play restarts with a goal-kick.

Victor Wanyama breaks through the Newcastle midfield but Kenedy brings him down before he enters the penalty area. Tottenham have a free-kick in a wonderful position and Eriksen is standing over it. 

Good defending by Lejeune who cuts out Dele Alli’s pass into the box for Sissoko at the crucial moment.

CHANCE! Son-Heung Min puts in a cross which is punched away by Dubravka. The ball doesn’t get very far but Eriksen’s volley towards the target is blocked. Spurs retain possession but play is eventually blown dead after a pass to Kane is made with the striker in an offside position. 

Harry Kane gets into the box but loses his footing on the edge of the penalty area before he can fashion a strike at goal.

Jonjo Shelvey attempts a through ball into the penalty area searching for Dwight Gayle, but the striker gives up on his run as the pass is hit with too much pace.

Newcastle take the opening kick-off and get the match underway!
