It's desperation time for Newcastle now. Shelvey hits one from long range, but it's blocked. He then tries to hack it into the box, but it's just not happening as the home fans start to make for the exits. They've seen enough.

Newcastle win a corner in stoppage time. Shelvey takes it, but guess what? It's headed clear and that might just be that for Benitez's side tonight.

Into FOUR minutes of stoppage time in Newcastle...

Yedlin is penalised for a foul on Davies and Everton win a free kick outside the hosts' penalty area. It looked a harsh decision, but this is perfect for the Toffees as they try to see this game out.

A chance for Newcastle to get the ball into the box. Shelvey pumps it in, but again it's too easy for Everton to defend against and Pickford eventually claims.

It's also a last throw of the dice for Benitez. He sends on Ayoze Perez for the last five minutes. Can he rescue a precious point for the Magpies?

Another Newcastle attack, another overhit cross, but somehow the hosts manage to get the ball to Atsu on the edge of the penalty area. He takes aim and shoots but it's far too comfortable for Pickford. Newcastle's finishing simply has not been good enough tonight.

Into the last 10 minutes at an increasingly frustrated St James' Park. Everton have done a good job of containing the hosts and are getting closer to a very rare away win. 

Gayle is FURIOUS! Yedlin does brilliantly to find the forward on the edge of the box but he goes down under a challenge from Williams. He appeals for a free kick but nothing is given, leaving him to pound the turf in frustration.

Benitez makes another change and on comes Rolando Aarons with Ritchie the man to make way. Ritchie's played well tonight but maybe just run out of steam a little bit in this second half.

Into the last 20 minutes here and Newcastle still trail and look set for yet another defeat. It would be harsh on the hosts, but unless they can find a way past Pickford it's going to be another tough evening.

GOOD SAVE DARLOW! An Everton free kick is fired into the box and onto Ashley Williams' head but he is denied by a flying save from the Newcastle goalkeeper.

A rare sight of goal for Everton, but Gylfi Sigurdsson wastes the chance, firing over the crossbar. Allardyce on the touchline turns away in frustration.

Here comes Joselu! Mo Diame's evening is over as Joselu comes on. Benitez has a word on his ear before he sprints on. No prizes for guessing the striker's instructions.

A scrappy few minutes as Everton win a bit of respite with a series of throw-ins down the right. Meanwhile, it looks as though Newcastle might be thinking about a change too.

Newcastle are having by far the better of the second half and have the visitors penned back. They don't deserve to be behind, on the balance of play, but they are not causing Everton too many problems either.

An hour gone at St James' Park and Everton break again, Wayne Rooney looks up and has a pop from range, but it's high, wide and into the stands.

Newcastle seeing plenty of the ball in this second half. A long ball forward from Shelvey is only headed on by Ashley Williams and Gayle goes up with Pickford but the goalkeeper wins that battle.

There's some movement down on the benches, it looks as though Everton will be making the first chance of the evening. There doesn't appear to be an injury so maybe Allardyce is not too happy with the way this second half is unfolding.

Newcastle are enjoying a really good spell, but still there's no goal to show for their efforts. You feel they must score while they are on top if they are to get anything out of this game.

Shelvey pumps a free kick into the box from out wide on the right, it falls to Merino who shoots but his effort is blocked. The ball them comes to Lejeuene who heads inches wide!

Holgate needs to be careful. The Everton man fouls Diame just minutes after being booked and could be in trouble if he doesn't setle down.

The action switches to the other end and Newcastle have a free kick on the edge of the box after Holgate fouls Ritchie. Holgate protests long and hard and is eventually booked. Meanwhile, Ritchie swings the cross in but it takes a nick off the wall and Everton can clear.

Early chance for Everton. The ball is swung into the box and is allowed to bounce between two defenders, but fortunately for the hosts, does just that before flying out to safety.

Here we go again folks. Everton get the second half underway and we are all systems go at St James!

HALF-TIME! Newcastle 0-1 Everton. The Toffees go into the break ahead but they can consider themselves fortunate. Newcastle have hit the post through Ritchie and Merino while Everton were a little fortunate as Darlow's poor handling allowed Rooney to score.

Into ONE minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half...

Another sight of goal for Newcastle. Atsu does really well to wriggle into the box and then pick out Gayle but his shot is far too tame and claimed comfortably by Pickford.

Everton attack down the right and the ball is crossed to Sigurdsson who heads goalwards but this time Darlow saves.

OFF THE POST AGAIN! How unlucky are Newcastle! That's twice they've hit the post and this one would have been something special. Merino takes aim from range and it beats Pickford but hits the post and rolls away to safety.

Great stuff from Yedlin! He picks up the ball out wide on the right, cuts inside, heads into the box but sees his shot blocked. That is much better from Newcastle, more direct and looking far more threatening.

Aaron Lennon twists and turns towards the penalty area but his cross is easily hacked clear. Having taken the lead, Everton are now starting to look the better team and the hosts are lacking in ideas going forwards.

Everton are on the attack again here and Newcastle will need to hold firm. Benitez's side have not been prolific this season and another goal before half-time, might be too much of a mountain to climb.

That's a real hammer blow for the hosts who had played so well and almost gone ahead but have been undone by some less than impressive goalkeeping from Darlow.

No sooner had Newcastle hit the post, then Everton went down the other end and broke the deadlock. The ball was played in and is headed goalwards and Darlow saves it but spills the ball, and Rooney is the quickest to react and slots it home.

OFF THE WOODWORK! So close to a stunning opening goal from Newcastle. They break and find Ritchie who smashes a shot against the top left hand post! So close!

Both teams are struggling to get the ball out of midfield, but eventually Everton work it out to the left and send in a hopeful cross for Calvert-Lewin who is inches away from getting a touch.

Nearly halfway through the first half at St James' Park and Newcastle have been the better side. Matt Ritchie looks bright and is at the heart of all the hosts' best moves, but so far they can't break Everton down.

Newcastle finally manage a shot on target! It's a decent effort from Ritchie from the edge of the box but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is onto it and gets down low to claim.

NEWCASTLE WANT A PENALTY! The hosts play some beautiful football to work the ball into the box and find Yedlin but he can't quite get on the end of it. He stretches for the ball, under pressure from a defender and goes down. The Newcastle players appeal, but it looks more in hope than anything else and the referee quite rightly says no.

Shelvey does well to keep the ball in before manging to dig out a cross, but once again it finds a blue shirt. Newcastle have been pretty good so far, but need to improve in the final third.

Back come Newcastle and Shelvey and Atsu combine well to feed Diame. He crosses into the box, but again the delivery is not quite good enough and Everton can clear.

The visitors are seeing plenty of the ball and manage to work a shooting opportunity. The ball is played through to Idrissa Gueye in the D, but he gets his shot all wrong and it flies well wide. That was a decent chance to at least work the goalkeeper.

Newcastle are harrying and pressing Everton at every opportunity and you certainly can't fault their workrate in these first 10 minutes. Everton, play the ball around patiently at the back but are struggling to get the ball anywhere near Karl Darlow in the Magpies' goal.

Everton boss Sam Allardyce is down on the touch gesturing at his players. They've been under the cosh in the opening few minutes but are just starting to string a few passes together now.

Shelvey is dispossessed in midfield and Everton can try to break. However, the ball is played forwards into space and Dominic Calvert-Lewin chases after it before going to ground amid the attentions to two defenders. He appeals for a free kick but the referee is having none of it.

Atsu and Ritchie combine down well down the right again and the ball is sent into the box but Diame can't quite get enough on the ball. Still, this has been a strong start by Newcastle, roared on by a noisy home support.

Up steps Matt Ritchie to take the kick, but his effort deflects off Morgan Schneiderlin in the wall and the chance goes begging.

And we're off! Newcastle get things underway at St James' Park and immediately go on the attack and win a free kick right on the edge of the box after Yedlin is clipped. Great, positive start by the hosts!
