Newcastle United vs Brentford
- Kickoff:
Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle United to seize the initiative when Brentford come to town this weekend
Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle United to seize the initiative when Brentford come to town this weekend - as he believes the Bees won't be content to just sit deep when they arrive at St. James' Park.
Dean Smith's side take on the Magpies in a Sky Bet Championship clash on Saturday (3pm kick-off), having lost just three of their 11 league games so far this season.
In doing so, Brentford have climbed to seventh in the table, just one place shy of the play-off spots at this early stage of the campaign.
And United boss Benitez reckons that with the quality they have, Brentford won't be adopting a defensive approach when the two teams line up against each other for the first time since a Worthington Cup tie in 2001.
"We have to concentrate on the next game. Brentford are a good team - they're doing well, they're scoring goals and they're not conceding too many," he said.
"Hopefully we can play at the level we can play, and we can do well, win and enjoy two days more, because after we have another game [against Barnsley].
"I think that they play well on the counter attack, but also they score goals. They defend well, they counter attack, they play well, they pass the ball - they're a good team.
"Hopefully we can attack and be on top of them all the time and then created chances in this way. But I don't see them playing so deep that they will not cope, or will not create chances."
One of Benitez's charges who is fighting for a place ahead of Saturday's game is forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scored twice for Serbia against Austria during the recent international break.
And the Magpies boss said he's been impressed with the work ethic and focus of the 22-year-old frontman.
"I was watching the reaction and watching the game and the goals. I was talking with him, so I'm really pleased for a striker to score goals," he said. "It's always positive, and for us it's always really important.
"Some people will say 'that means that he will play', but it means that I am pleased with him scoring goals and I am pleased with him working hard with what he has to do.
"We had a very good chat the other day, and he's really focussed. I think he knows that it's really important to keep working hard, and then if he has a chance, to take his chance."
Benitez added: "Because he was suspended at the beginning (of the season), he couldn't play. It's been more difficult for him.
"But I was really pleased with him against Queens Park Rangers, and the way that he is training is fine. Especially after this international break, he has scored these two goals, and I think he is more settled down, focussed and relaxed in terms of what he has to do. I am confident that he will do it well."
