Papiss Cisse's fifth goal of the season earned Newcastle United a 1-1 draw away at Burnley on Tuesday night.

The Senegalese front man struck early in the second half to cancel out George Boyd's opener, and a point was the least the Magpies deserved for a performance full of character in Lancashire.

After Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes both went close for the Clarets, Boyd struck them into the lead 11 minutes before half-time with a left-footed drive following good approach play from Ings.

But United introduced Steven Taylor and Remy Cabella at the break, and the latter played a key role in the equaliser, which saw Cisse tuck home Daryl Janmaat's cross.

The Magpies then threw everything at their opponents for the remainder of the half but were unable to find the winner their endeavours deserved.

Burnley started brightly and created the evening's first opening on nine minutes through top scorer Ings.

Scott Arfield's through ball found the front man inside the penalty area, and Ings checked back onto his right foot and took aim towards the far corner, only to see Rob Elliot make a fine, one-handed stop to beat the ball clear.

Ings then turned provider, feeding strike partner Barnes who curled narrowly over the top as the Clarets started to turn the screw.

It took Newcastle 23 minutes to fashion an opening of their own, and it came through a slick, swift counter-attack.

Papiss Cisse, Cheick Tiote and Ayoze Perez combined on the halfway line to free Sammy Ameobi on the left, and the wide man drove into the area before striking a low, angled drive which Tom Heaton did well to smother.

Cisse was next to try his luck, latching on to a clever Yoan Gouffran knock-down at the far post, but the Senegalese striker blazed wildly over under pressure from Jason Shackell.

Just past the half-hour mark Heaton came to Burnley's rescue again, this time saving from Abeid, who had been fed by Perez and raced through on goal.

And that stop proved pivotal as the hosts raced straight up the other end and took the lead through Boyd.

Kieran Trippier's long ball forward was headed down into his path by Ings, and the former Hull and Peterborough man took a touch before unleashing a fierce strike which found the back of the net through a clutch of bodies.

Manager Alan Pardew responded to his side's first-half showing with a double change at half-time - introducing Steven Taylor and Remy Cabella in place of Mike Williamson and Perez.

And Cabella made an immediate impact as the Magpies equalised within three minutes of the restart.

The French international saw a close-range strike blocked, and when the loose ball was delivered back in by Janmaat, Gouffran dummied and Cisse pounced from six yards to net his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors were suddenly in the ascendency and Cheick Tiote stung Heaton's palms from 25 yards, before Taylor nodded Ameobi's left-wing delivery wide at the near post.

On 75 minutes Emmanuel Riviere entered the fray in place of Sammy Ameobi as United went in search of a winner, but despite heavy pressure in the closing stages, they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
