Loan Watch: Alex And Adam Among The Goals

Written by Newcastle Utd

Alex Gilliead and Adam Armstrong both signed off from their loan spells by scoring on the final day of the Football League season

Young duo Alex Gilliead and Adam Armstrong both signed off from their loan spells by scoring on the final day of the Football League season this weekend.

Gilliead broke the deadlock after just four minutes in Carlisle United's emphatic 5-0 win over Notts County at Meadow Lane, with fellow Magpie Macaulay Gillesphey also featuring for the Cumbrians.

Twenty-year-old forward Gilliead was replaced by Joe Thompson after 73 minutes, having bagged his fifth goal in League Two since joining Keith Curle's side on loan in September, while defender Gillesphey played the full 90 minutes.

And Coventry City's Adam Armstrong racked up his 20th League One goal of the season in the Sky Blues' 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic.

Armstrong added to Romain Vincelot's header to secure a last-day win on his final outing for Tony Mowbray's men, who finished five points outside of the play-off spots.

Another loanee, Gael Bigirimana, played the full game at SportDirect.com Park, bringing the curtain down on his own temporary stint with Coventry.

League One champion Haris Vuckic came off the bench for the final 22 minutes as his Wigan Athletic team lost 4-1 to Barnsley on Saturday.

Despite Wigan taking the lead through Will Grigg, the Tykes fought back to score four and book their play-off spot, with Ivan Toney making an appearance as an 84th-minute substitute for interim boss Paul Heckingbottom's side.

Midfielder Liam Smith, meanwhile, was an unused substitute as Blackpool - who are managed by former United player Neil McDonald - were relegated to League Two after a 5-1 defeat at Peterborough United.

And in League Two, already-relegated York City drew 1-1 at Morecambe, with teenage defender Kyle Cameron playing the full 90 minutes as the Minstermen bid farewell to the Football League.

Fellow centre-half Lubo Satka, also on loan at York, did not feature in Jackie McNamara's squad.

In France, Florian Thauvin played the whole game for Marseille as they beat Reims 1-0 thanks to a goal from Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi.

Remy Cabella also made an appearance at the Stade Velodrome, coming on for Scotland frontman Steven Fletcher just after the hour.

And Sammy Ameobi was among the substitutes in Cardiff City's 1-1 Championship draw with Birmingham City, but didn't make it onto the pitch as his loan spell with the Bluebirds came to an end.
