Loan Watch: Toney Strikes In Tykes Win

Written by Newcastle Utd

Ivan Toney scored his second goal for Barnsley as they climbed to within touching distance of safety in League One

Ivan Toney scored his second goal for Barnsley as they climbed to within touching distance of safety in League One.

The 19-year-old striker netted the Tykes' third goal of a 3-2 victory at fellow strugglers Colchester United on Saturday.

When Toney headed home on the hour mark at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, it put Barnsley three up, and they managed to survive a late onslaught from the hosts, who could only manage two late goals in response.

Elsewhere in League One, Adam Armstrong was unable to fire Coventry Coty to victory at Sheffield United, as the Sky Blues went down 1-0.

Teenage front man Armstrong, who has 13 goals to his name so far this term, played the full 90 minutes at Bramall Lane and went close on a couple of occasions but couldn't find a way past Blades keeper George Long.

Fellow Magpie Gael Bigirimana was not named in the Sky Blues' squad.

In the same division, Haris Vuckic was not involved in Wigan's defeat at home to Blackpool, while Shane Ferguson and Millwall saw their fixture at Oldham succumb to the weather.

In League Two, Carlisle United remain in the play-off places following an impressive 1-1 draw at promotion-chasing Oxford United.

The Cumbrians came from behind to level at the Kassam Stadium, with Alex Gilliead handed a starting spot and playing the opening 76 minutes, while Macaulay Gillesphey was an unused substitute.

In the Championship, Sammy Ameobi was a second-half substitute for Cardiff City, who let slip a two-goal lead to draw at home against Sheffield Wednesday.

The forward played the final 22 minutes for the Bluebirds, who dropped out of the play-off places with the result.

And finally, across the Channel, Remy Cabella started for Marseille, who recorded a 1-1 home draw with Gazelec Ajaccio.

Playmaker Cabella was replaced after 81 minutes of the Ligue 1 clash.
