Loan Watch: Gilliead's Up For The Cup

Written by Newcastle Utd

A number of United's loanees were in action over the weekend, in the FA Cup and Football League

Alex Gilliead helped Carlisle United reach the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The England Under-20 forward, who is on loan with the League Two Cumbrians until the end of the season, played 84 minutes of the first round clash at Home Park.

And Gilliead continued his impressive recent form with another good performance, as first half goals from Antony Sweeney and Hallam Hope sealed the win.

Fellow Magpies loanee Macaulay Gillesphey missed the cup tie as a precaution, having picked up a knock in training earlier in the week.

Also in the FA Cup, Haris Vuckic returned from injury to make his first Wigan Athletic appearance since September.

However, the Slovenian forward was unable to prevent the Latics from slumping to a 4-0 defeat at Bury.

Vuckic was handed a starting spot at Gigg Lane and played the opening 45 minutes before being replaced at half-time.

In the Championship, Mike Williamson kept his second clean sheet in three games for Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they recorded a goalless draw with Burnley.

Following on from a victory over Birmingham City last weekend, and a 1-0 midweek defeat to Bristol City, Wolves held the high-flying Clarets to a stalemate at Molineux.

Centre-back Williamson played the full 90 minutes in the third game of his month-long loan in the Midlands.

Also in the second-tier, Sammy Ameobi stepped off the substitutes' bench for the final 27 minutes of Cardiff's 2-0 home victory over Reading.

The Bluebirds were already two goals to the good when Ameobi was called upon - as a replacement for Joe Mason - and the wide man helped the Bluebirds continue their push for a Championship play-off place.
