INTERNATIONALS: Clean Sheet For Elliot

Rob Elliot won his second international cap for Republic of Ireland on Wednesday, helping them to a 2-0 friendly victory over Oman in Dublin.

The United goalkeeper was a half-time replacement for former Magpies stopper Shay Given - who was making his international comeback - and the pair combined to keep a clean sheet for the Boys in Green in a contest where they were never seriously threatened.

A goal in each half from Crystal Palace new boy Kevin Doyle and Reading's Alex Pearce secured a first victory in ten months for Martin O'Neill's side, who face Georgia in their first European Championships qualifier on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Newcastle youngster Haris Vuckic was among the goalscorers as Slovenia Under-21s eased to a 5-0 win over Andorra on Wednesday.

Attacking midfielder Vuckic set Slovenia on their way with an 18th-minute opener, and created a number of chances for his nation.

However, they had to wait until the second period to put the game out of sight, with four goals in the second half sealing all three points in the European Championships qualifier.

At under-18 level, Adam Armstrong bagged a brace as England came from behind to beat Holland 4-1 at Leigh Sports Village.

Marlon Slabbekoorn gave the visitors the lead but Armstrong's left-footed finish drew the Young Lions level, and the front man was at it again on the stroke of half-time, firing England ahead.

Josh Sims and Demetri Mitchell then netted in the second period to secure a convincing win for Neil Dewsnip's youngsters.

Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute.
