Sammy Clears Up Goal Debate

Who was it who scored Newcastle's stoppage time winner against West Brom? Sammy Ameobi gave nufc.co.uk his view

Tannoy announcer Rob Byron gave Newcastle's stoppage time winner against West Bromwich Albion to Sammy Ameobi, but the super sub insisted that he would not be claiming the goal.
His long-range drive struck an unwitting Papiss Cisse on the back to wrongfoot Baggies keeper Ben Foster and roll over the line as United gained three points despite a below-par second-half display.
But despite Ameobi being awarded the goal at the time, most news agencies credited Cisse with the decisive touch and the England under-21 international said that he was just happy to play a part in an important victory.
"I'm not going to claim anything," he told nufc.co.uk. "If it's given to me then great, I've got my first goal, but if not then I've got to still work towards that.
"But it's just great to contribute towards the goal and I'm happy because it got us three points."
Even if he does ultimately have to settle for an assist rather than a goal, it would be the second winner created by the 20-year-old in the space of four days.
On Thursday night, Ameobi's superb skill and perfectly-weighted pass teed up Gabriel Obertan for the only goal of the game against Club Brugge and he has certainly made the most of the opportunities afforded to him by Alan Pardew this week.
"It's good for my stats," he grinned. "Hopefully I can keep improving on that and contributing to more in the future.
"The gaffer just basically said he wanted me to get at them and create, and obviously I tried my best to do so.
"I ended up contributing to a goal which is good, so hopefully I can work on that.
"I've had lot of game time in the past week so it's great and I look forward to more in the future."
Demba Ba's 35th minute goal gave United a lead they just about warranted at half-time, but in the second period the Baggies were the better side and deservedly equalised through Romelu Lukaku.
But the late intervention from Ameobi and Cisse stole the win for the Magpies to lift them into the top half of the Barclays Premier League table.
"I think in the second half we didn't play too great but it's great for the confidence of the boys," the wideman said.
"We need to get some wins so to get three points off today was great. I think it would have been tough to come away having only picked up a point - or none even - so I'm glad we got something from the game.
"It's been a tough start to the season and we haven't been too great but we're tenth now and that's good, so hopefully we can build on that."
