Gutierrez: 'We'll Be Fighting Fit'

Written by Newcastle Utd

Jonas Gutierrez believes a weekend off can help United get some key players back to fitness

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Jonas Gutierrez admits a fixtureless weekend is far from ideal for a side bang in form like United, but the midfielder knows it provides the opportunity to ease their injury worries.

With a number of key players suffering knocks and strains in recent weeks Newcastle have found themselves almost down to the bare bones, yet still managed to conjure up a five-game winning sequence.

During that time Gutierrez has been deployed not only in his normal position on the left-wing, but also as a left-back and a central midfielder - excelling in every role.

The Argentine told nufc.co.uk he is more than happy to fill in wherever needed to aid his own development, but is looking forward to having a few players back to fitness by the time Stoke come to Tyneside next Saturday.

"We have time for players to come back, to recover from their injuries and to have the full squad," said Gutierrez, of a blank weekend in the Magpies' calendar.

"You want to keep playing and playing when you are in a winning way like we are, and it would be great to have a game this Saturday.

"But we know as well that we have a lot of injuries at the moment. People like Perchy, Danny Guthrie, maybe even Besty can all come back and it is good for team. We want all the players as fit as possible.

"I have played in a lot of different positions because we have had a lot of injuries, but I feel good, I feel comfortable and confident, and I am trying to do my bit for the team.

"I want to be a better player as well, I want to improve all the time and playing in different positions will help me with that."
