Liam Gibson

Position:
Defender

Left back Liam is hoping to make up for lost time this season after injury and illness interrupted a key part of his career.

A solid defender with a fine left foot, Liam models his game on Spain’s Jordi Alba, and has made great strides since breaking into Peter Beardsley’s second string at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Liam had a short spell on loan at Gateshead in 2015, before returning to St. James’ Park to make his debut for the first team in their 2-1 friendly win over Lillestrom in La Manga in February 2016. A month later, Stanley-born Liam was named on the bench for United’s 1-0 Premier League win over West Bromwich Albion, and remains an important part of the Under-23 set-up.

He then suffered a serious illness, which halted his progress, but he returned to action in the 2018/19 season and joined Grimsby Town on loan the following term.
