Youngsters aim to top cup group

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Newcastle United Under-23s round off their Premier League Cup group stage campaign against Colchester United at Whitley Park on Monday (1pm kick-off).

The Magpies have already made sure of their place in the last 16 of the competition, having clocked up ten points from their five outings so far.

And victory over the U’s – who have nothing other than pride at stake – will ensure they finish top of Group D.

In any case, United’s second string will be seeking a morale boost following a heavy defeat against Southampton last time out – their fourth straight reverse in the Premier League 2 Division Two.

Opponents Colchester – members of the Professional Development League – have also struggled of late, losing their last two fixtures – to Crystal Palace and Coventry City – and shipping seven goals in the process.

Tickets for the game at Whitley Park are available at the turnstiles, priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. Admission is free for season ticket holders and members.
