Young Magpies set for Saints test

Written by Tom Easterby

Newcastle United Under-23s welcome Southampton to Whitley Park on Monday night (7pm kick-off).

The young Magpies, who beat Newcastle Benfield 3-0 to reach the Techflow Marine Northumberland Senior Cup final on Friday night, are back in Premier League 2 Division Two action against the Saints, with both sides looking to climb the table.

United haven’t won in their last three league outings, though they will have been buoyed by their convincing win over Benfield on Friday, when a brace from Callum Roberts and one from Mo Sangare sealed the win. Both players could again be involved on Monday night.

Southampton, meanwhile, arrive on Tyneside in a reasonable vein of form, having added to their two recent league wins over Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion with a 2-0 Premier League Cup win at Watford on Thursday.

Six points currently separate the two teams in Division Two, with Southampton in ninth on 20 points and Newcastle in 11th with 14. United, though, have a game in hand.

Tickets will be available at the turnstiles for Monday’s game, priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions, while admission is free for season ticket holders and members.
