Young Magpies learn Premier League Cup group stage opponents

Written by Luke Vinton

Newcastle United Under-23s will face West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and either Scunthorpe United or Southend United in the group stage of the Premier League Cup.

The final spot in Group C will be decided on Tuesday, 10th September when the latter pair meet at Roots Hall.

The tournament is split into eight groups of four teams, with United's youngsters aiming to reach the knockout stages as one of the two top sides.

The young Magpies enjoyed a memorable run to the Premier League Cup final last term before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

West Brom are the only Group C opponent who compete in the same division as United, with the Baggies also plying their trade in Premier League 2 division two.

Newcastle's second-string will face each side home and away as they look to seal their place in the last 16 of the competition for the third successive season. Fixture dates will be revealed in due course.
