Young Magpies bid to bounce back at Blackburn

Written by Tom Easterby

Newcastle United Under-23s will be looking to bounce back from their Premier League Cup defeat at Sheffield United when they travel to Blackburn Rovers on Monday night (7pm kick-off).

United were beaten 2-1 by the Blades in Friday night’s quarter-final tie, but they have an opportunity to bounce back quickly when they take on Rovers at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground in Leyland.

Monday’s game is a chance for the Magpies to make up some ground on Stoke City, who currently sit in 10th place in Premier League 2 Division Two. Newcastle are 11th, with 14 points and six points shy of the Potters, but they do have two games in hand.

But they will face a stern test against Rovers, who are four points clear at the top of the division, having lost just twice in the league this term. In the reverse fixture between the two teams, Rovers prevailed, winning 2-0 at Whitley Park.

Goalkeeper Nathan Harker and winger Victor Fernández - who made their first team debuts in the Magpies’ friendly against Royal Antwerp in Spain last month - could feature, along with the likes of Luke Charman and Mo Sangare, who also started Friday night’s game.

The clash with Rovers had originally been scheduled for Monday, 12th March, but was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and subsequently rescheduled.
