Yedlin's USA beaten at Wembley

Newcastle United full back DeAndre Yedlin was in action at Wembley on Thursday, featuring in the USA’s 3-0 friendly defeat to England.

The 25-year-old started for Dave Sarachan’s side in what was a fundraiser for Wayne Rooney’s charitable foundation, with the England hero among the substitutes for the Three Lions.

Yedlin could do little about Jesse Lingard’s fine opener, which came just a few moments before Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled home his first senior goal for his country.

Debutant Callum Wilson made it 3-0 after the break and sealed a convincing win for Gareth Southgate’s men, with Rooney coming on for his 120th and final international appearance late on.

Yedlin played the full 90 minutes for the USA, who face Italy in Genk on Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, Fabian Schär was part of the Switzerland side which suffered a shock defeat to Qatar at the Comunale de Cornaredo in Lugano.

The Magpies centre half played the full game as Akram Asif’s late winner gave Qatar victory in the friendly clash. Switzerland now face Belgium in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute as England Under-21s extended their unbeaten run to 21 games with a 2-1 win over Italy.

A handful of other United players are set to feature for their countries over the weekend, with Martin Dúbravka (Slovakia), Salomón Rondón (Venezuela), Paul Dummett (Wales), Christian Atsu (Ghana) and Mo Sangare (Liberia) due to be in action.
