Yedlin helps USA to win over Paraguay

Written by Tom Easterby

A number of Newcastle United players were in action for their countries this week, with full back DeAndre Yedlin among them.

The full back helped the USA to a 1-0 victory over Paraguay, playing 90 minutes at the Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Bobby Wood’s penalty won it for the hosts, and Yedlin will now return to Tyneside to prepare for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Huddersfield Town.

Midfielder Mikel Merino, meanwhile, also got 90 minutes under his belt, playing in Spain Under-21s’ 3-1 European Under-21 Championship qualifying victory over Estonia in Ponferrandina’s El Toralín ground.

Chancel Mbemba was also in action, featuring in DR Congo’s friendly against Tanzania. The centre half played the full game, but couldn’t prevent a 2-0 defeat.

Meanwhile, Islam Slimani featured as a substitute for Algeria, coming on just after the hour and being booked soon after in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Iran in Graz.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is on loan at Fulham, scored both goals and was booked in Serbia’s 2-0 friendly win over Nigeria at Barnet’s The Hive stadium, and Henri Saivet – who is on loan at Sivasspor until the end of the season – played just over 70 minutes of Senegal’s goalless draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Le Havre.

Goalkeeping duo Freddie Woodman and Matz Sels didn’t add any caps to their names, though, with Woodman an unused substitute in England Under-21s’ 2-1 win over Ukraine and Sels remaining on the bench during Belgium’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Brussels.
