Woolmer on the whistle

Written by Tom Easterby

Andy Woolmer will take charge of Newcastle United's Sky Bet Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers on Monday afternoon.

United head to Ewood Park for a 3pm kick-off in their first outing of 2017, and Northamptonshire referee Woolmer has been appointed for the fixture - which will be the second Magpies game he's refereed this term.

Woolmer was the man in the middle of the 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup back in September, where goals from Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran sent Rafa Benitez's side through to the next round.

On that occasion, he booked four players, including Gouffran and Ayoze Perez. In his 24 games so far this season, Woolmer has shown 54 yellow cards and just one red card, with 15 of those games being second tier clashes.

He will be assisted on Monday by Akil Howson and Christophers Akers, and David Coote will be the fourth official.
