Woodman trains with England senior squad

Written by Tom Easterby

Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman stepped up to the senior England squad to take part in training as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia.

Woodman, 20, was called up to the England Under-21 squad last week, with Aidy Boothroyd’s side set to face Holland and Latvia in the European Under-21 Championships first qualifying round.

But on Tuesday, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford having pulled out of Gareth Southgate’s squad with an injury, Woodman – a World Cup winner with England Under-20s in June – was brought into the senior side for their training session, where he worked alongside fellow goalkeepers Joe Hart, Jack Butland and Tom Heaton.

The highly-rated stopper, who won the Golden Glove award at this summer’s Under-20 World Cup as Paul Simpson’s youngsters triumphed in South Korea, will be hoping to earn his second cap at under-21 level when the Young Lions take on Holland on Friday night.

They follow that up with a home game against Latvia on Tuesday, 5th September at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Woodman will compete with Angus Gunn and Dean Henderson for a place in Boothroyd’s team as he bids to add to his solitary appearance for the under-21s, which came against Kazakhstan last year.
