Woodman saves spot-kick as England reach last eight

Written by Rory Mitchinson

England progressed to the quarter-finals of the Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday afternoon – with Freddie Woodman saving a penalty against Costa Rica.

The Magpies’ stopper kept out Randall Leal’s spot-kick a minute from time, though the KV Mechelen forward was on hand to net the rebound.

The damage had already been done for the Ticos by that point, however, Everton’s Ademola Lookman having struck twice for England either side of the break.

Another United player, Adam Armstrong, entered the fray with 20 minutes remaining in Jeonju, and almost added a third before Leal’s late strike.

England will now play either Mexico or Senegal in the last eight, who lock horns in Incheon tomorrow.
