Woodman and Armstrong book semi-final spot

Written by Dan King

Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman helped England reach the semi-finals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Mexico.

The Newcastle pair both started in South Korea on Monday as the Young Lions - led by former Magpies assistant coach Paul Simpson - progressed thanks to a second-half goal from Liverpool new boy Dominic Solanke.

England, who were reduced to ten men late on when Tottenham's Josh Onomah was sent off, will now face Italy in the last four on Thursday.

Armstrong - who scored in England's first game of the tournament against Argentina - partnered Solanke up front and was replaced by Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 70th minute, while Woodman made good saves in each half.

He has now conceded just one goal in four games at the tournament - and even that only came after the Newcastle netminder saved a penalty from which Costa Rica midfielder Randall Leal converted the rebound at the quarter-final stage.
