Williams re-joins Gateshead on loan

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Callum Williams has re-joined National League side Gateshead on loan until the end of the season, subject to ratification from the FA.

The 20-year-old made 18 appearances for the Heed between August and December, and could make his second bow against Maidstone United at the International Stadium on Saturday.

Williams has played twice for Newcastle’s Under-23s this term, the second of which came as a substitute against PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night.

The defender’s decision to head back across the Tyne has pleased Gateshead boss Steve Watson, who told the club’s website: “We liked Callum first time around and we hoped to keep him for the rest of the season initially.

“But obviously he’s an ambitious young lad so quite rightly he wanted to go back to Newcastle just to see where he stood with them.

“Now he’s explored his options and decided to come back here, which is our gain. He’s a talented young lad who’s versatile and works hard for the team and he’s the type of individual that we want in our squad.

“We’ve got three centre backs who can play right back but it's not a natural position for any of them so it makes sense to bring in a more natural right back like Callum to balance the squad out a bit better as well.”
