A youthful Newcastle United Under-23s side were held to a draw by Whitley Bay on Tuesday night.

Peter Beardsley took a squad of 19 players to face the Northern League side at Hillheads, with the majority of the Magpies side comprising of youngsters who had featured for the under-18s last term.

United – who fielded the likes of Nathan Harker, Owen Bailey and Lewis McNall – withstood some pressure from the hosts in the first period as Peter Glen-Ravenhill forced Harker into a good save, while Craig Spooner went close for the visitors.

After the break, Beardsley made a total of eight substitutions just before and after the hour mark, but despite the efforts of McNall, who saw his effort stopped by Richard Flynn, and Bailey, whose header was also kept out, it finished goalless.
