Watts joins Stevenage on loan

Written by Tom Easterby

Young Newcastle United defender Kell Watts has joined League Two side Stevenage on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old, who made his first team debut for the Magpies in their Premier League Asia Trophy clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers last month, has linked up with Dino Maamria’s men and will remain at the Lamex Stadium for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign.

It is England Under-19 international Watts’ first loan move away from St. James’ Park – and he could make his EFL debut when Boro travel to Leyton Orient on Saturday afternoon.

The teenager was a regular in the Magpies’ under-23s side last term, making 39 appearances for United’s second string and scoring six goals.

He helped Newcastle’s youngsters reach both the Premier League Cup final and the Premier League 2 Division Two play-off final, before lifting the Citi Soccer Sevens trophy in Hong Kong in May.
