Venezuela run-out for Rondón

Newcastle United forward Salomón Rondón was a second half substitute for Venezuela as they drew 1-1 with Iran on Tuesday.

Rondón, who featured for his country against Japan last Friday, entered the fray with 66 minutes on the clock in Doha, with Darwin Machis and Ali Gholizadeh having already netted the game’s only goals before the break.

The 29-year-old will now return to Tyneside as his club continue their preparations for Monday’s Premier League game at Burnley.

A handful of other players will also report back for club duty after the final round of international fixtures this week, with DeAndre Yedlin not part of the USA side that lost 1-0 to Italy in Genk and Freddie Woodman an unused substitute in England Under-21s’ 5-1 victory over Denmark.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Martin Dúbravka’s UEFA Nations League survival hopes were ended by Slovakia’s 1-0 defeat to the Czech Republic.

The result confirmed Slovakia’s relegation, but goalkeeper Dúbravka did get another 90 minutes under his belt in Prague.
