United's under-23s are in seventh heaven

Written by Dan King

Tom Heardman hit a hat-trick as Newcastle's under-23s beat Burnley 7-0 in a practice match at Little Benton on Thursday.

The big striker - who started the season on loan with Hartlepool United - helped Peter Beardsley's side to rack up a six-goal lead before half time in the behind-closed-doors friendly game.

Burnley took the opportunity to field a trialist while Tyrique Bartlett - son of former South Africa international Shaun - appeared as a second-half substitute for the Magpies. He has joined United's Academy, although the club are awaiting the international clearance he requires to play competitively for the under-18s.

Luke Charman gave Newcastle an eighth-minute lead as he headed home from Callum Roberts' free-kick, then Charman turned provider for Heardman and Roberts to get on the scoresheet.

In the 26th minute, Heardman got his second from close range, then completed his treble after turning home Roberts' cross.

Jamie Holmes got in on the act before the break, then added another in the 53rd minute. Both sides made changes after that, and there were no further goals.

Newcastle United Under-23s: Nathan Harker, Callum Williams, Michael Newberry, Stuart Findlay, Adam Wilson, Callum Roberts (Yasin Ben El-Mhanni 60), Daniel Barlaser (Dan Ward 60), Liam Smith, Jamie Holmes (Liam Gibson 60), Luke Charman, Tom Heardman (Tyrique Bartlett 60).
