United pay tribute to Pav

Newcastle United will pay tribute to Pavel Srnicek before Friday’s night’s match against Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park (kick-off 7.45pm GMT).

The club will mark the first anniversary of the popular former goalkeeper's death before kick-off and supporters are asked to be in their seats early in order to take part in the tribute.

Srnicek, who made 190 appearances for the Magpies across two spells at the club, passed away on 29th December 2015 following a cardiac arrest in his native Czech Republic. He was just 47 years old.

The Czech international first arrived on Tyneside from hometown club Banik Ostrava in January 1991, becoming a cult hero as part of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers side.

He left United in 1998 and went on to play for clubs including Sheffield Wednesday, Brescia, Portsmouth and West Ham, before returning to St. James’ Park for the 2006/07 season.

Despite his time away, Srnicek always maintained a special bond with Tyneside, with the song ‘Pavel is a Geordie’ becoming a terrace favourite.

The thoughts of everyone at Newcastle United are with his family and friends.
