United fund late Metro services on Boxing Day

Written by Lee Marshall

Supporters attending Newcastle United’s Boxing Day match with Sheffield Wednesday will be able to use the Tyne & Wear Metro system to get to and from St. James’ Park after the club agreed to cover the cost of evening services.

Monday's festive Championship fixture is scheduled to kick-off at 7.45pm, which falls after the region’s Boxing Day services traditionally finish for the day.

However, the club is once again funding additional Metro services from Newcastle city on all routes to enable fans to complete their journey home.

Full timetables are available here.

Supporters are advised to plan well ahead for the match and to consider the following:

* Metro will operate regular trains until approximately 10.30pm, after the game has finished.
* Usual fares will apply on all Metro services. Magpie Mover passes will be valid for travel within existing terms of use.
* There will be no Northern Rail or other national rail services.
* Bus services will operate on some routes only before the game, with most finishing by 7pm - check with operators for details of their Boxing Day routes and timetables.
* There will be only a very limited bus service on a small number of routes after the game.
* Dedicated Park and Ride 'Soccer Bus' X50 operated by Go North East will run before and after the match.

Final departures from Newcastle city centre on Boxing Day

2235: Central Station to Park Lane (Sunderland)
2248: Haymarket to Airport
2316: St. James' to the Coast
2345: Haymarket to South Gosforth

Newcastle United also paid for evening Metro services on Boxing Day 2015, when a match against Everton at St. James’ Park was also rescheduled after being selected for live television broadcast.

Steve Storey, Head of Safety and Security at Newcastle United, said: “We are pleased to confirm that transport provisions will be in place to ensure fans can get to and from St. James’ Park safely and conveniently on Boxing Day.

“We would like to thank Nexus and transport operators for their co-operation, including the staff who will be working on the day to help supporters to complete their journeys.”

Huw Lewis, Head of Communications and Customer Services at Nexus, said: “Metro and the dedicated park and ride X50 ‘soccer bus’ will operate until after the game this year thanks to support from Newcastle United, but other buses will not be running after the game and there are no national rail services.

“We are working together to make supporters aware of the local transport available so they can plan ahead and enjoy the game.”
