United drawn away to Sheffield Wednesday in Emirates FA Cup third round

Written by Dan King

Newcastle United will face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Magpies, along with the other 19 Premier League clubs and all 24 Championship sides, enter the competition at the start of 2023, with ties set to be played across the weekend of Saturday, 7th January and Sunday, 8th January.

The draw was made at Anfield, the home of holders Liverpool, on Monday evening with Eddie Howe's side - ball number 27 - handed a trip to take on the Owls, currently third in League One under Darren Moore.

Wednesday beat Mansfield Town 2-1 in the second round and have met Newcastle on seven previous occasions in the competition. United have won five times, most notably at the semi-final stage in 1904/05, and lost only once - in round four in 1965/66.

The South Yorkshire club have come out on top in the last three meetings in all competitions, though, beating the Magpies 1-0 in the League Cup in 2015/16 and then completing the double over United as Rafa BenĂtez eventually led Newcastle to the Sky Bet Championship title.

The date and time of the tie, as well as ticketing information, will be confirmed on nufc.co.uk shortly.
