Under-23s take on Middlesbrough on Friday

Written by Dan King

Peter Beardsley’s under-23s will look to build on their excellent start to the season when they take on Middlesbrough on Friday night.

The young Magpies have won both of their Premier League 2 matches so far, scoring eight goals in the process, and travel to Heritage Park in Bishop Auckland for a 7pm BST kick-off as they bid to make it a hat-trick of victories.

United could include Jamie Sterry and Daniel Barlaser, who both played for Rafa Benítez’s first team against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Sterry played for the opening 45 minutes of last week’s 4-0 PL2 win at West Bromwich Albion after recovering from a double hernia operation, while Barlaser has caught the eye in both games so far.

Meanwhile Marcus Tavernier - the younger brother of ex-Newcastle defender James - could feature for Boro.

He scored a hat-trick in last week’s 4-0 win over Norwich before making his senior bow against Scunthorpe in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Boro are coached by former Newcastle midfielder Paul Stephenson and also have a 100 per cent record so far this season.
