Toon two on target

Written by Dan King

Two Newcastle United strikers were on target for their countries in the latest round of international fixtures.

In a World Cup qualifier on Friday, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a fine goal for Serbia as they won 3-1 in Georgia to stay top of Group D.

The 22-year-old had been starved of service but when he received the ball just outside the box in the 64th minute, he quickly turned and fired home to put his side ahead. He then came off in the 71st minute.

Then on Saturday, Adam Armstrong fired England's under-20s to their first victory at the Four Nations Tournament as they beat the hosts France 1-0.

Armstrong had already come close on a couple of occasions before, in the 71st minute, he raced onto Ryan Ledson's through-ball and tucked the ball into the bottom right corner.

He came off in the 88th minute while goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute. England play Senegal in the third and final game on Tuesday afternoon, knowing that a win will be enough to crown them as tournament winners.

England's under-17s, meanwhile, secured their qualification for the UEFA European U17 Championship finals after cruising to a 4-0 win over Slovenia. Lewis Gibson, the Newcastle defender, played the full match.

Chancel Mbemba played for DR Congo as they lost 2-1 to Kenya in a friendly on Sunday, while Matt Ritchie was an unused substitute for Scotland as they left it late to beat Slovenia 1-0. Grant Hanley had withdrawn from the squad last week due to injury.
