Tierney to take charge against Hornets

Written by Dan King

Paul Tierney will be the man in the middle when Newcastle United take on Watford at St. James' Park on Saturday (kick-off 3pm GMT).

The Wigan-born official is now in his seventh season in the top flight, having worked his way up through the lower leagues prior to making a first outing in the middle of a Premier League fixture back in August 2014.

He had previously been named among the National Group of Referees in 2009, a year after being an assistant referee during the Magpies' league defeat to Hull City at St. James' Park.

Tierney, who was named on FIFA's list of referees in January 2018, took charge of last season's Carabao Cup final and the Community Shield clash between Leicester City and Manchester City in August, while he has taken charge of a Championship play-off final at Wembley - Aston Villa's win over Derby County in 2019.

He has already refereed three Newcastle fixtures this season, all on Tyneside - August's 2-2 home draw with Southampton, the defeat to Chelsea in October and December's victory over Burnley.

And in total this term, he has officiated 19 games in all competitions, showing 68 yellow cards and one red.

Constantine Hatzidakis and Neil Davies will assist him on Saturday, with Robert Jones named as the fourth official.

Jarred Gillett will take the role of VAR, supported by James Mainwaring.
