Team news: Yedlin returns

Written by Rory Mitchinson

DeAndre Yedlin makes his first appearance of the Premier League campaign as Newcastle United take on Stoke City at St. James’ Park today.

The American has not figured for the Magpies since July’s 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Mainz 05, where he was forced to leave the field during the first half.

Chancel Mbemba also returns to United’s starting XI, having suffered an injury while playing for the Democratic Republic of Congo against Tunisia earlier this month.

A third and final change from the team who started Sunday’s 1-0 win at Swansea City sees Christian Atsu – a second-half substitute in South Wales – come in for Jacob Murphy.

Rob Elliot again starts between the sticks, with Ciaran Clark and skipper Jamaal Lascelles in central defence.

Mikel Merino keeps his place in midfield, alongside Isaac Hayden, with Ayoze Pérez deployed in the No. 10 role once more.

Matt Ritchie starts on the opposite flank to Atsu, and frontman Joselu lines up against his former club for the first time.

Newcastle United: Rob Elliot, DeAndre Yedlin, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden, Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu, Ayoze Pérez, Joselu.

Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Javier Manquillo, Florian Lejeune, Mohamed Diamé, Jonjo Shelvey, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle.
