Team news: United unchanged

Written by Dan King

Eddie Howe has named an unchanged starting XI for Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Brentford (kick-off 3pm GMT).

Allan Saint-Maximin has failed to recover in time from the calf injury he sustained against Aston Villa, but Ryan Fraser is fit despite limping off in the second half at West Ham last weekend.

Javier Manquillo has returned to the squad following a short lay-off with an ankle injury, but Howe admitted on Friday that the Spaniard is slightly shy of full fitness having only resumed training in recent days, and has opted against changing the team which performed well at the London Stadium seven days ago.

That means Martin Dúbravka continues in goal, with Emil Krafth at right-back, Matt Targett on the left and Dan Burn partnering Fabian Schär at centre-back.

Jonjo Shelvey will captain the side and joins Joe Willock and Joelinton in what has been an extremely effective midfield trio in recent weeks.

Fraser and Jacob Murphy will occupy the flanks and provide support for Chris Wood, who will again lead the line for the Magpies as they look to extend their six-match unbeaten run.

Bruno Guimarães will have to wait a little longer for his full debut, although the Brazil international will be hoping for another cameo from the bench, where he's joined by Manquillo, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernández, Paul Dummett, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón and Dwight Gayle, as well as substitute goalkeeper Karl Darlow

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett, Joe Willock, Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton, Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy, Chris Wood

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernández, Javier Manquillo, Paul Dummett, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimarães, Miguel Almirón, Dwight Gayle
