Team news: Shelvey returns against former club

Written by Rory Mitchinson

Jonjo Shelvey starts for the first time since the opening day of the season as Newcastle United take on Liverpool – the midfielder’s former club – at St. James’ Park.

Shelvey was dismissed midway through the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in August, and sat out their next three games as a result.

He has twice appeared as a second-half substitute since then – against Stoke City and Brighton & Hove Albion – but will figure from the outset today, alongside Mikel Merino.

Elsewhere, there is one other alteration to the Magpies’ line-up, with Javier Manquillo coming in for Chancel Mbemba at left-back.

The rest of United’s rearguard is unchanged, with Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and DeAndre Yedlin all involved once more, as well as goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

And, for the fifth time in a row, Joselu is preferred to Dwight Gayle up front, with Christian Atsu, Ayoze Pérez and Matt Ritchie providing the Spaniard’s ammunition.

Newcastle United: Rob Elliot, DeAndre Yedlin, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Javier Manquillo, Mikel Merino, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu, Ayoze Pérez, Joselu.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jesús Gámez, Florian Lejeune, Isaac Hayden, Mohamed Diamé, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle.
